The Valley City Police Department would like to remind the public about proper placement of signs, including garage sale and political signs.

Signs may be placed in your yard, but they must remain outside of the DOT right-of-way. This generally means placing them behind the sidewalk and not in the boulevard area. If there is no sidewalk present, signs should be placed far enough back so they do not obstruct the DOT right-of-way.

Additionally, signs may not be attached to traffic signs or traffic poles, including stop signs, street lights, or similar structures.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe and compliant.

The Valley City Police Department would like to remind and inform the public about two new stop signs that have been installed at the intersection of 3rd Ave. NE and 4th St. NE due to ongoing traffic safety concerns in the area.

For those unfamiliar with the location, this intersection is located near the Leevers Foods and Faith Lutheran Church parking lots.

Traffic traveling east and west on 4th St. NE is now required to stop before proceeding through the intersection with 3rd Ave. NE traffic.

Please remember to come to a complete stop, look for oncoming traffic, and proceed only when it is safe to do so. Your attention and cooperation help keep our community roads safe for everyone.

Thank you for driving safely!

On May 13, 2026, the Valley City Police Department proudly participated in the North Dakota Teen CERT Program’s final emergency response drill, marking the culmination of a year-long training process for Valley City High School students.

Throughout the program, students received hands-on training in emergency preparedness and response, ultimately earning their Teen CERT certification. During the final exercise, students had the opportunity to work alongside local first responders and see firsthand how agencies coordinate during emergency situations.

We would like to thank our partners from the Valley City Fire Department, Barnes County Ambulance, Barnes County Dispatch, Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, and Barnes County Emergency Management for helping make this experience possible and for demonstrating the important roles each agency plays during an emergency response.

Following the drill, each student received a backpack filled with emergency supplies to help continue promoting preparedness and safety within our community.

We are proud of these students for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to serving and supporting their community!

Today, during National Police Week, the Valley City Police Department is deeply honored to participate in the North Dakota Fallen Peace Officer Memorial Highway Dedication.

This solemn event serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice made by law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Today, we proudly honor Valley City’s only fallen officer, Officer Hermon Myron Personius.

Officer Personius’ End of Watch occurred on August 28, 1906, while courageously investigating a train robbery. During the encounter, he was fatally shot, and the suspect disappeared into the darkness, never to be seen again. Although one individual was initially charged in connection with Officer Personius’ murder, he was later released after proving he was elsewhere at the time of the crime. On December 28, 1906, the individual Officer Personius apprehended during the robbery investigation was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor.

More than a century later, we continue to remember Officer Personius’ bravery, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice. It is our privilege to honor his legacy along Highway 200 and to take part in today’s memorial dedication convoy.

Please join us in remembering Officer Hermon Myron Personius and all fallen peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

On the evening of April 10, 2026, the Valley City Police Department located a vehicle submerged in the Sheyenne River near the 1300 block of Riverview Drive. Due to elevated spring water levels and strong currents, the vehicle could not be safely recovered at that time.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was contacted and temporarily reduced water flow from Baldhill Dam to lower river levels, allowing for a safe recovery operation.
On the morning of April 11, 2026, the vehicle was successfully removed from the river with assistance from Valley City Fire and Rescue, Gille Auto, the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, Barnes County Ambulance, and the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
With assistance from the Wahpeton Police Department, the vehicle was confirmed to belong to Al Odden, who had been reported missing since April 1, 2026. Mr. Odden was located deceased at the scene, and his identity has been confirmed.
Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Valley City Police Department.

One of the best perks of being an Animal Control Officer? Getting to meet some pretty adorable animals along the way 🦊

Say hello to Nani, a young red fox with quite the story. She was found alone and abandoned after her mother had last been seen injured several days earlier. Our officer took Nani into care, made sure she was healthy, and worked closely with North Dakota Game and Fish to find her the best possible future.

We’re happy to share that Nani has found her new home at the Dakota Zoo in Bismarck! There, she’ll become part of their Ambassador Program—helping teach students and community groups all about North Dakota wildlife.

A big THANK YOU to the Dakota Zoo for stepping in and giving this little fox a second chance ❤️

If you’d like to visit Nani, you can find her at the Dakota Zoo!

Dear Mother Nature… we get it, April Fools was funny 😅
But you can call off the snowstorm prank anytime now!

For everyone out on the roads today, winter isn’t done with us yet—so let’s stay safe:

❄️ Slow down – Give yourself extra time to stop
🚗 Increase following distance – Slick roads mean longer braking
💡 Use headlights – Be seen in low visibility
🧊 Watch for icy spots – Bridges and intersections freeze first
📱 Stay focused – No distractions behind the wheel
🧤 Be prepared – Keep a winter kit in your vehicle just in case

Let’s all do our part to get where we’re going safely. And Mother Nature… seriously… we’re ready for spring now 🌷
