A More Excellent Way Health Improvement Organization (MEW) conducts annual community baby showers and breastfeeding peer counseling programs in aspirations to improve the birth outcomes of African-American (AA) and other women of color by providing breastfeeding support, mentoring, critical health and parenting information; also, linking them to prenatal services and other forms of support. In our

America, AA babies die at twice the rate of other babies before they reach their first birthday and are more likely to suffer from asthma and other illnesses. AA women are three times as likely to die from labor and delivery complications. Breastfeeding has been shown to significantly reduce infant illness and death. African American women’s breastfeeding rates lag far behind other races. Since the MEW AA breastfeeding project was started in 2006, the gap between AA breastfeeding rates and others has decreased as AA breastfeeding rates are increasing.

Don’t miss the Contra Costa African American Community Baby Shower on Sunday, August 24th at Appian Way SDAC, 980 Appian Way in El Sobrante,CA from 10-2:30 pm. It is a Free and fun event for the whole family. Hosted by A More Excellent Way Health In collaboration with Appian Way SDAC with sponsorship from John Muir Health! There will be bid ticket prizes like car seats, cribs and strollers for those who win the games on the zoom shower from 10-12:30 pm and lots of information, resources and incentives from our 30+ health resource table partners. I had an amazing vacation in Paris and visited the Louvre Museum where I not only saw the museum, but lots of breastfeeding artwork of babies, toddlers and Jesus! Great to see breastfeeding normalizes, celebrated and captured by great French artists!
