The first five officers were appointed on April 5, 1900. The first Police Chief was W. Stanford. Today's force continues to maintain service to the citizens of Vallejo with a Patrol Division, Traffic Division, Investigations Division and the Community Services Section. The department currently has two School Resource Officers working in the Vallejo schools. Police Chief Shawny Williams currently heads the organization. He is the twelfth person to serve in that capacity.

The Vallejo Police Department is pleased to welcome two of our newest officers, Mathieu Antelme ( #810) and Jarrelle Tramble ( #811).

Both recently graduated from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Academy and are beginning their law enforcement careers with the Vallejo Police Department. Each brings a different background and perspective, along with a shared desire to serve the community and grow within the profession.

Officer Mathieu Antelme ( #810) was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and raised in Petaluma, California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Cal Poly Pomona.

Officer Antelme chose a career in law enforcement because he wanted to challenge himself and pursue a profession that would continually test his abilities and provide opportunities to learn and grow. He chose the Vallejo Police Department because of the opportunity to gain experience in many different aspects of police work while serving a community close to home.

Outside of work, Officer Antelme enjoys watching movies, riding motorcycles, and spending time at the beach.

Officer Jarrelle Tramble ( #811) was born in Walnut Creek, California, and raised in Brentwood. He attended Los Medanos College, where he studied Criminal Justice.

Becoming a police officer has been a longtime goal for Officer Tramble. Growing up, his experiences with school resource officers showed him how an officer who is present, approachable, and willing to engage can have a positive influence on young people and the community. Those experiences helped shape his desire to become an officer and contribute to the positive growth of the community he serves.

Officer Tramble also has a personal connection to Vallejo through family and friends who live in the city. He was drawn to the Vallejo Police Department by that connection, the diversity represented within the department, and the opportunity to make a difference in the community.

Outside of work, Officer Tramble enjoys coaching children in martial arts, working out, attending comic conventions, and exploring new places.

As Officers Antelme and Tramble begin their careers in Vallejo, they will have the opportunity to serve and learn from a community made up of many cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Their commitment to public service reflects VPD’s PACT to Vallejo: Partnership, Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency.

On August 30, 2026, at approximately 1:52 p.m., officers assigned to the Vallejo Police Department Patrol Division encountered a large group of approximately 40 to 50 dirt bike riders traveling throughout Vallejo and engaging in dangerous and illegal riding activity.

The riders ran red lights and stop signs, traveled against the flow of traffic, obstructed roadways, and repeatedly fled from officers attempting enforcement stops. Their actions created a significant danger to motorists, pedestrians, and the riders themselves.

VPD officers coordinated with the California Highway Patrol Air Unit throughout the incident. At various points, officers backed away from close pursuit while CHP maintained visual observation of the riders from overhead. This allowed officers to continue coordinating enforcement efforts while reducing the risks associated with pursuing dirt bikes through city streets.

Officers ultimately arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident. The arrestees were from San Pablo, Soquel, Santa Cruz, Richmond, Santa Rosa, Vallejo, and two were from Sonoma. Eight dirt bikes and two vehicles associated with the incident were also towed.

This is a friendly reminder that when an officer attempts to stop you, pull over. Do not turn a traffic stop into a pursuit. Drivers who choose to flee from law enforcement can face significantly more serious criminal consequences when their actions cause serious injury or death. The decision to flee can turn a traffic violation into a felony and place innocent members of the public at risk.

The Vallejo Police Department continuously evaluates whether the need to apprehend a fleeing driver immediately outweighs the risk a pursuit presents to the public. When that risk becomes too great, officers may terminate a pursuit and, when available, transition to less hazardous strategies, including air support and other technology, to continue apprehension efforts.

Fleeing does not eliminate accountability. VPD will continue to collaborate with allied law enforcement agencies and use available technology to identify and apprehend individuals who endanger the Vallejo community.

On August 30, 2026, at approximately 2:21 a.m., an officer assigned to the Vallejo PD's Patrol Division observed a red Ford sedan traveling westbound on Redwood St. at a high rate of speed.

The officer made a U-turn in an attempt to catch up to the vehicle, but was unable to do so. A short time later, the officer located the Ford after it had crashed into a residence in the 2200 block of Sacramento St. The driver had fled the scene on foot before the officer arrived. Thankfully, no one inside the residence was injured. Multiple families were temporarily displaced while the Vallejo Fire Department assessed the residence for potential hazards, including possible gas leaks resulting from the collision.

During an inventory search of the crashed vehicle, officers located information identifying a possible driver. A witness also reported seeing a man fleeing from the area following the collision.

Another VPD officer responding to assist located a man running near Sacramento St. and Frisbie St. The man had torn clothing and visible injuries consistent with having recently been involved in a collision. Based on the witness information, evidence located inside the vehicle, and the circumstances of the investigation, officers identified the man as the suspected driver and detained him without incident.

During their contact with the suspect, officers observed several signs consistent with alcohol impairment, including the odor of an alcoholic beverage, slurred speech, bloodshot and watery eyes, and an unsteady gait. Due to injuries sustained during the collision, the suspect was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect was arrested and, due to his injuries, was subsequently cited and released at the hospital.

Impaired driving puts more than the driver at risk. It endangers passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians. This collision is a reminder that the consequences of impaired driving can extend far beyond the roadway. If you plan to drink, plan ahead. Use a designated driver, rideshare service, taxi, or another safe way home. Never drive impaired!

The Vallejo Police Department will host a Gun Buyback Event on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 505 Santa Clara Street, behind the JFK Library.

Community members may voluntarily turn in fi****ms with no questions asked and receive a Target gift card while supplies are available.

Compensation:

Handguns: $50
Long ri**es and sh****ns: $50
Assault weapons: $100

Important Safety Instructions:

All fi****ms brought to the event must be unloaded and secured in the trunk or bed of the vehicle.

Upon arrival, remain inside your vehicle and do not handle or remove the fi***rm. Event personnel will provide further instructions.

The Vallejo Police Department is saddened to announce the passing of retired K9 Loki, who faithfully served the Vallejo Police Department and the Vallejo community for many years.

K9 Loki was more than a working police K9 and served as a trusted partner, protector, and valued member of the Vallejo Police Department. Throughout his career, K9 Loki worked alongside his handler as they developed into a successful K9 team through years of training, trust, and service.

K9 Loki was intelligent, competitive, and highly driven. He had an exceptional ability to learn quickly and often needed to be shown a task only once before excelling at it. Several K9s were evaluated before K9 Loki was selected, but there was something different about him from the beginning.

Throughout his years of service, K9 Loki remained ready to work and committed to his duties. Whether training, responding to calls, or supporting officers in the field, K9 Loki served with the drive and determination that defined his career.

Following his retirement, K9 Loki transitioned from police service to a quieter life at home. As he grew older, his ability to do many of the things that had once come easily to him was gradually limited, but his loyalty and personality remained unchanged.

In his final moments, K9 Loki was surrounded by family, friends, and coworkers whose lives he had touched throughout his career and retirement.

K9 Loki dedicated years of his life to serving the Vallejo Police Department and the Vallejo community. His service and contributions to the VPD K9 Unit will remain part of the department's history.

On August 17, 2026, at approximately 2:58 p.m., officers assigned to the Vallejo Police Department Patrol Division responded to the 300 block of Avian Drive regarding a reported domestic violence incident.

While officers were responding, a VPD Communications Operator advised that the suspect had left the area in a white Ford. A responding officer located the vehicle near Columbus Parkway and Hilary Way and detained the suspect without incident.

At the residence, the victim reported that an argument with the suspect escalated into a physical altercation. Officers observed a visible injury and confirmed there was an active restraining order protecting the victim from the suspect.

During the investigation, officers asked whether the suspect was known to possess a fi***rm. The victim told officers that during a previous incident, she observed the suspect place what appeared to be a fi***rm outside near the bedroom window.

VPD K9 Stryker responded to assist officers with the search. K9 Stryker searched outside the apartment and alerted to a bush directly beneath the bedroom window. Officers searched the bush and recovered a fi***rm.

After being advised of his Miranda rights, the suspect confirmed the recovered fi***rm was his. He told officers he had never fired it and did not know whether it was operational. The suspect did not explain how he obtained the fi***rm. A records check later revealed that the fi***rm had been reported stolen in Richmond, California.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Solano County Jail on charges related to the domestic violence investigation and fi***rm possession. The fi***rm was seized and booked into evidence.

On August 22, 2026, at approximately 6:12 p.m., Vallejo Police Department (VPD) officers responded to the 900 block of Virginia Street after receiving a report of an 18-month-old child who was not breathing. While officers were responding, VPD Communications provided an update that the child was choking on a grape.

A VPD officer arrived and immediately began providing first aid to the child. Relying on his training, the officer administered emergency care and successfully dislodged the grape from the child's airway, allowing the child to breathe again.

Vallejo Fire Department personnel arrived and provided additional medical care. The child was subsequently transported to a local hospital in stable condition for further evaluation.

Although VPD officers respond to a wide range of public safety incidents, their training also prepares them to provide immediate assistance during medical emergencies. In this case, the officer's training, quick response, and immediate action helped a young child during a critical emergency.

"Our officers serve our community in various ways, including responding to medical emergencies where every second is crucial," Chief Jason Ta stated. "This officer remained calm, relied on his training, and took immediate action when the child needed help. I am proud of his response and the professionalism he displayed. Most importantly, I am grateful that the young child is safe and received the care they needed."

VPD is grateful for the positive outcome and for the coordinated efforts of everyone who provided care to the child.
