There’s something special about families coming together at school — especially when lunch is involved!

Patterson families brought their lawn chairs, blankets, and lunches, and joined their students for a schoolwide family lunch. With all grade levels eating at the same time, it was a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time together and connect with our school community.

Family engagement can happen in so many ways. Sometimes, it’s attending a meeting or volunteering. And sometimes, it’s simply sharing a meal, having a conversation, and being present.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, we're spotlighting VCUSD staff and community for the entire month as part of our "Unidos, somos más" series — starting with our own superintendent, Rubén Aurelio.

From his family's roots in Argentina to the empanadas he still makes from scratch, his heritage shapes how he leads. His message to students: "Never give up... be proud of your heritage, language, and work ethic. Don't set limits upon yourself."

Meet the student voices at the Board table!

Three VCUSD students are stepping into leadership roles this year as our 2026-27 student trustees:

Sarai Portis — Jesse Bethel High School
Ibrahim Edais — Vallejo High School
Samara Williams-Adams — John Finney High School

Each brings a different perspective, but they share a common goal: making sure students have a voice in the decisions that shape their schools.

From improving communication and supporting student wellness to advocating for equitable opportunities and tackling everyday challenges, Sarai, Ibrahim, and Samara are ready to speak up, listen, and represent their peers.

We’re excited to see these three students lead, advocate, and help shape the conversation during the year ahead.

The teacher who inspired Jen Castro’s career taught her in the same school where she now teaches.

Castro started kindergarten at Dan Mini Elementary School during the 1989–90 school year. In third grade, teacher Linda Dudenhoeffer made learning fun and inspired Castro to imagine herself leading a classroom one day.

Now, after 19 years with VCUSD, Castro is teaching fifth grade at her former elementary school—and carrying that legacy forward for a new generation.

Her journey has included plenty of full-circle moments, from teaching the younger siblings of former students to working alongside a teacher she may have once taught herself.

“I hope my students remember me the way I remember my third-grade teacher—as someone who was kind and made learning fun.”

VCUSD recently completed a nearly $35,000 campus beautification project featuring colorful privacy screens, pole banners, and entrance graphics designed to help students and families feel safe, welcomed, and excited to come to school.

Inspired by our students’ perspectives, nearly every illustration is based on photographs of VCUSD schools or features real homes, landmarks, and natural elements found throughout Vallejo. The oversized images celebrate the people and places that make our community special while adding privacy around the campus.

Our students pass these fences nearly every school day. They deserve an environment that reflects how proud we are of them, their school, and their community.

The project was funded through LCAP Action 2.9, Facilities Improvements, which supports safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments. From a student who struggled in school to an educator who now helps young people discover the power of their own voices, Moira Bielby’s journey is a reminder that our paths need not be perfect to lead us exactly where we belong.

Bielby has taught in VCUSD since 2006 and now teaches eighth-grade English language arts at Hogan Middle School. In her classroom, students are encouraged to take risks, persevere through challenges, and recognize that their words can change hearts, minds, and the world.
