Rabbits. Through the buggie windshield. Along the Mare Island San Pablo Bay Trail entry road. Kinda like the old days. Before the possibly the entire Mare Island rabbit population was killed by exposure to the almost 100% fatal Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease News Network (V2). We lost virtually ALL of both native to this region, jackrabbits and the little cottontails you see in this and other recent posts. They are not considered native here, but obviously thrive. So, while many will say, “where are two rabbits, there will be countless”, that was not the case in the last few years. The virus is manmade in Australia, an Ebola like symptom/rapid dead and lethal to all rabbits, pikas, including house rabbits. There is a series of vaccines. But in the wild, it’s very difficult to get all of the vax administered. Welcome home, bun-buns. And, so many of our wildlife from raptors to owls to coyotes are all dependent on rabbits for meals.

2885 have viewed this post. Have we FILLED 3 boat trips?! We really MUST FILL these boats. WHY?! Because at the price of diesel, it would be fair to the dedicated friends and owner/operators of River Dolphin, Dolphin Charters. Please, wildlands community, our Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve and San Francisco Bay Osprey Days friends. To reserve, call 510-527-9622. $45 per person.

Pinning. Posting. Sharing. Please, please help me get this invitation out! We’d love to FILL these boat trips. Imagine at the cost of diesel fuel at the pump right now, if we don’t hop aboard. Dolphin Charters will be running at a loss and they’ve been sooo gracious and accommodating. Let’s register. $45 per person. Details on flyer. Call 510-527-9622.

Sometimes, just ONE photo captures what you’ve spent a half hour trying to accomplish. As my friend Margaret noted in her text tonight, “the moon, Venus, Jupiter and Mercury are aligned tonight. Very likely. But, at Mare Island San Pablo Trail on this blustery as heck evening, the black horizontal cloud blocks little Mercury. And, since I took this photo it’s also gobbling up Jupiter. Good evening, my wildlands community friends.

In viewing this post, I thought, “wait, where did that Angel hovering over the moon come from? It wasn’t there earlier.” I suspect that’s my beloved brother, Rod. Coming up on 3 months since he escaped to Heaven, where he’s surely going about learning his duties as a newly minted Angel. God knows I need him and Angel Dog Nitro, right now.

Willow at this pier next to the prior post. I think I’ll repost my last post. Same message of marvel in nature. Different tree. “Visiting the finger piers at the southern end of Mare Island today, with staff of the US Army Readiness Unit 63rd. A follow up site visit where the WWII historic shore power buildings 732 and 734 stood. I found this wild and very lush tree, a willow, growing right out of the concrete near the pier. Amazing where nature finds a place to call home.”

A follow up site visit where the WWII historic shore power buildings 732 and 734 stood. I found this wild and very lush tree, maybe an elm, growing right out of the concrete near the pier. Amazing where nature finds a place to call home.
