Rabbits. Through the buggie windshield. Along the Mare Island San Pablo Bay Trail entry road. Kinda like the old days. Before the possibly the entire Mare Island rabbit population was killed by exposure to the almost 100% fatal Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease News Network (V2). We lost virtually ALL of both native to this region, jackrabbits and the little cottontails you see in this and other recent posts. They are not considered native here, but obviously thrive. So, while many will say, “where are two rabbits, there will be countless”, that was not the case in the last few years. The virus is manmade in Australia, an Ebola like symptom/rapid dead and lethal to all rabbits, pikas, including house rabbits. There is a series of vaccines. But in the wild, it’s very difficult to get all of the vax administered. Welcome home, bun-buns. And, so many of our wildlife from raptors to owls to coyotes are all dependent on rabbits for meals.
