Update: This past Tuesday, the Vallejo City Council authorized the City Manager to engage the Department of Tax and Administration to begin tax collection and Measure P priority areas were reaffirmed by the current city council.

The city will soon begin recruitment for commissioners to form part of the Measure P Oversight committee, and city staff will return in April to discuss spending plans and priorities with the new council. Moreover, Councilmember Loera-Diaz will have a town hall in mid-January to hear directly from the community on Measure P priorities. Date/logistics to come soon.

What does this all mean? Things are moving forward, as promised, for the community.

Measure P: The decision is yours, Vallejo.

The decision on Measure P is yours. Over the past couple months, we have presented factual information to provide a different perspective than the spamming, misinformation, and bullying on Facebook and Nextdoor that a few Measure P opponents have relentlessly engaged in. Nowadays, these tactics are deployed on an ongoing basis to just about any issue we debate as a city.

Opponents suggested over the past couple of months, that you’d have to pay an extra $600 in gas per year, an extra $450 on a new car (that is a $50K vehicle), an extra $4000 in taxes, and any big number that would scare and was not grounded in our reality. All arguments were debunked in-person, or at an online debate (posted below). With each post and argument presented, the Yes on P committee has asked you to not just take the posts at face value but to do your own research to confirm the information presented.

Measure P is essentially about trust and the future of Vallejo. Why Trust? The Yes on P committee believes the safeguards in the measure, and actions of sitting council members present sufficient evidence to provide revenue for them to address urgent roads, trash, crime, blight and youth challenges. The safeguards have been in many general sales tax measures across California cities and have been faithfully and successfully implemented. But, no law is perfect and can account for all what-ifs so we do have to trust our elected officials too. The No on P’s argument essentially boils down to suggesting that we shouldn’t trust councilmembers they publicly supported in the last election cycle (who are staying on for at least another 2 years) and council candidates they are publicly supporting in Tuesday’s election.

The soon to be Councilmembers have not even been declared winners yet and a few Measure P opponents are already sowing doubt about their ability to do their jobs and be prudent stewards of our public funds. So yes, this vote is also about the future of Vallejo. It is a small shared investment we’re making to address current and urgent challenges and a step forward in repairing the relationship between government and community. It is also to push back against cynicism, misinformation and a relentless attack on governance and management. It is also a vote on healthy and solution oriented dialogue.

We hope you join us in delivering a strong and clear message on November 8.

Thank you.

Brien Farrell, Former City Attorney: “I have not heard, nor can I conceive of a method to fund significant new city services and facilities without more revenue. I have not read or heard of a plan that will lead to meaningful progress through cost savings or smarter practices.”

I just turned 70. I can’t wait to see if things will get better, because of a hypothetical plan in the future. Our unhoused and our youth can’t wait. Our streets can’t wait. Hille…

Measure P is estimated to raise $18 million.
This is calculated by the current receipts from Measure B/V, AKA the "transaction and use tax." That tax is 1%, so $21 million x Measure P .875% = $18.375 million.

Side note, the sales tax also listed on the chart is the 1% we get from the county. All the rest of the sales tax you pay goes to the state and Solano County. Of the current 8.375% sales tax we pay (sales and trans/use), Vallejo only gets 2%.
