From the Desk of Supervisor Fulgenzi:
On Sunday, June 14, emergency crews safely mitigated a minor chlorine gas leak inside the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Shaft 18 facility located at 20 Westlake Drive / Columbus Avenue in Valhalla. The collaborative response was highly effective, successfully demonstrating that local and regional emergency safety protocols function exactly as intended.

Public Safety: The gas leak was completely contained within the building. There was no threat to the public and absolutely no impact on the drinking water supply.
Injuries: One facility employee suffered minor chemical burns. They were promptly taken to a hospital, treated, and released.
Water Quality: A DEP spokesperson confirmed that the water remains perfectly safe and continues to fully meet all state and federal quality standards.
Cause: A failing chlorine tank valve.

Statement from Town Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi: Public safety must always come first. 🛡️
While New York State has recently expanded its sanctuary policies, we cannot assume a blanket approach to non-cooperation with federal authorities represents the views of all residents.
In Mount Pleasant, our priority is—and always will be—the safety and well-being of our community.
Our Commitment to Mount Pleasant:
• Targeted Cooperation: Our law enforcement agencies will continue to work with federal authorities when necessary to identify, apprehend, and remove convicted individuals who are in the country illegally and pose a threat.
• No Safe Harbor: We will not allow those known to be dangerous to find refuge in our town.
• Common-Sense Accountability: Reasonable people can disagree on immigration policy, but there should be broad agreement that individuals convicted of serious crimes must be held accountable.
Our primary responsibility is to protect the residents of Mount Pleasant, and we will continue to take that responsibility seriously.
