On August 8, 2026, CHP Newhall Area Officers responded to Sierra Highway to assist the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department with traffic control as Los Angeles County Firefighters battled a brush fire.

An impaired driver drove through the closure manned by our officers. Our officers conducted an enforcement stop and observed objective signs and symptoms of intoxication from the driver. The driver’s blood alcohol content level was 0.36% - 4.5x the legal limit of 0.08% and he was arrested for DUI. If you’ve been drinking, please don't drive and ask a sober driver to pick you up. Road closures are established to protect first responders and members of the public. If you drive while under the influence and/or drive through a road closure, you put yourself and everyone else around you at risk.

August - Back to School Safety Month

Students in the Santa Clarita Valley will start returning to school next week. Let’s be extra cautious and watch out for our students as they walk, bike, and get dropped off/picked up at their schools. Here are a few friendly reminders to make sure every trip is a safe one:

- Obey speed limits in school zones
- Watch out for school buses and students entering/exiting the buses
- Stop when school buses display a stop sign and red lights
- Avoid distracted driving
- Always buckle up before every ride
- Use designated crosswalks
- Plan ahead and leave early to account for delays during drop-off/pick-up times

Let’s make this school year as safe as possible for our students and everyone on the road!
