On Friday, Mayor Scott James Matheson presented a proclamation designating June 14, 2026, as Tommy L. Simmons Remembrance Day and Gun Violence Awareness & Prevention Day in the City of Valdosta.

This proclamation, which was presented to Simmons' family, honors his memory and the life that was tragically lost to gun violence while also recognizing the importance of working together to build a safer and stronger community. We stand with those who have experienced loss, support efforts aimed at prevention, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a city where people can live, work, and thrive in peace.

By remembering those we have lost and uplifting those who continue to heal, we strengthen the bonds that unite us and move forward with hope for a safer future.

**Update 6/12 11:45 AM: Work at the intersection has concluded**

🚧Traffic Advisory: Intersection of Madison Highway and Oak Street/Dampier Street 🚧

City crews and Georgia Power will be working at the intersection of Madison Highway and Oak Street/Dampier Street to transfer utilities from the damaged pole that was struck last Friday.

The intersection has been set up as a four-way stop, and motorists are asked to use caution, follow all temporary traffic controls, and expect minor delays in the area.
Georgia Power is scheduled to connect the new power service beginning at 9:00 a.m. Thank you for your patience as this important repair work is completed safely.
