New Tax Assessments

This year, the Georgia General Assembly passed new legislation to change how your property tax assessment looks. On April 2, Senate Bill 566 was signed into law by the Governor, requiring the Georgia Department of Revenue to redesign the assessment notices.

All counties in Georgia must use this form.

A tax estimate was not included in this new design because the millage rates for Lowndes County, the Lowndes County School Board, and/or the Cities, which determine your bill, have not yet been set. Therefore, any estimate provided would not be accurate. What you see on your notice is information about the value of your property and all exemptions you're receiving. If you believe the value of your property is incorrect, you can appeal by July 17, 2026, by contacting the Lowndes County Tax Assessors' Office at 229-671-2540 during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 am-5 pm.

As you can tell we've got some future firefighters in the making. On Tuesday, at Junior Fire Academy campers had the opportunity to participate in a vehicle fire exercise. They kept cool under pressure and got the job done!

We're proud to invest in the next generation of fire service leaders! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

During their regular meeting on May 26, 2026, the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners lifted the countywide burn restrictions that were previously implemented due to dry conditions and elevated wildfire risk. Following recent rainfall and improved conditions, officials determined it was safe to lift the restrictions based on guidance from the Georgia Forestry Commission and Lowndes County Fire Rescue. The burn restrictions will be lifted beginning June 1.

Residents are reminded that all outdoor burning must comply with the Lowndes County Burn Ordinance. The ordinance allows outdoor burning activities in the unincorporated areas of Lowndes County on the first and third Saturdays of each month. With the burn restrictions lifted, the first allowable day for outdoor burning will be Saturday, June 6. While the residential burning of hand-piled vegetation in unincorporated Lowndes County does not require a permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission, agricultural, commercial, acreage, and land-clearing burns may require a permit and must continue to follow all Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) guidelines.

Property owners should always monitor weather and wind conditions, keep burns attended at all times, and take the necessary precautions to help prevent wildfires. For additional information regarding outdoor burning regulations, please contact Lowndes County Fire Rescue at 229-671-2730

Lowndes County Chairman Bill Slaughter has been reappointed vice chair of the Federal Policy Committee for the ACCG Georgia Counties. ACCG policy committees develop positions on key issues impacting county government. Those issues are later approved by the full association membership as the ACCG Policy Priorities, which guide the associationโ€™s advocacy efforts on behalf of counties during the legislative session.

We are incredibly proud of Chairman Slaughter for being reappointed as Vice Chair of the Federal Policy Committee, and for the strong impact he continues to have at both the state and federal levels.
