MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY PLANT PROJECT (CHEM 4920 - Fall 2015)

Dr. Manning, Senior Chemistry Faculty Member, is giving his Medicinal Chemistry students a hands-on approach to learning. Each student has been assigned a plant to grow and study. The students are learning the background of the plants and its medicinal effects. At the end of the semesters students will sample the plant and/or soil for the medicinal agents. For example, one group is growing both the Japanese and English Yew trees, which produce the cancer drug taxol. Many of the plants have their root in ethano-botany from cultures around the world and have had some molecule make its way to at least preclinical trials. A partial list of plants are:

-TRM234 Wild Cotton
-ISO009 Chinese Cucumber Trichosanthes kirilowii
-IM079 English Yew
-0HR154 Lavender Lady
-0W206 German Chamomile
-3354 Cancer Bush
-3400 Andrographis
-3453 Ma Huang
-ISO003 Asiatic Ginseng
-TRM080 Butterbur
-TRM427 Maralroot
-TRM525 Wild Quinine
-TRM529 Indian Nightshade
-TRM935 Figwort
-Peppermint
-Aloe
-Japanese Yew
