The Alaska Council of School Administrators 2026 Superintendent's Annual Conference wrapped up a little over a week ago, but these performances deserve an encore! 🎶

On September 25, Valdez High School student musicians and music teacher Ann Norris opened the second day of ASA's annual conference in Valdez, impressing school leaders from across the state.

The performances featured singing, a full band, a guitar-and-fiddle duel, a handbell choir, and original guitar and vocal solos. Superintendents were enthusiastic about the talent and creativity our students brought to the stage! Our students even persuaded a few superintendents to join the fun.

Thank you to our student performers and Mrs. Norris for representing Valdez City Schools so well and giving our guests a memorable start to their day. Enjoy these videos of their whole-group performances!

Behind every lesson are hours of preparation, thoughtful adjustments, and a commitment to helping students succeed. Thank you for noticing who needs encouragement, challenging students to grow, and building relationships that make learning possible.

We appreciate you today and throughout the year. 💙

We are so grateful for community partners like PWSC - Prince William Sound College T3 Alliance Alaska, and University of Alaska Fairbanks! Through these partnerships, our students work alongside industry professionals, gain hands-on experience with technology like drones, and explore emerging career fields.

Thank you for helping students discover new interests and imagine what’s possible for their futures!

Last Friday, students in the new Part 107 club at Valdez High School had an opportunity to fly a drone in the national airspace under the guidance of PWSC's Part 107 pilots Jason Tippetts and Don Bickley.

To begin the training, PWSC's Chief Part 107 Remote Pilot in Command, Don Bickley, asked the students the most important question he could think of: "Do you have a right to use technology?"

Everyone said yes.

The students then received a rapid-fire briefing on the intersection of geopolitics and manufacturing that may affect their lives as they begin working with drones more professionally, whether under Part 107 or the upcoming Part 108. As Don stated on the field: "Think about what it feels like to have this kind of control for yourself when you are in the air."

Students were divided into two groups. Each group had their own PWSC pilot in command, a person manipulating the flight controls, and visual observers. Each group operated independently but also interdependently, as both flight crews utilized the natural layout of the football field to maintain an intuitive separation of space, crew responsibility, and a way of avoiding other classes also utilizing the field.

This training exercise was part of the T3 Valdez STEAMfest, an initiative from the Alaska Center for Energy & Power at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
