🚧 MEALS AVE REPAVING PROJECT UPDATE: Sidewalks and bike path are being installed!

Here are more updates for October 9-15:
• Sidewalks are being installed this week/weekend
• Additional compacting (yes, we know... again!) to ready the subbase for paving
- Expect some noise and vibrations during compacting during daylight hours (mostly this weekend & early next week)
• Paving is expected to start the middle of next week and should only take a few days to complete - stay tuned for new traffic patterns when this starts!

🚩 Keep following detours, flaggers, and signage, and stay nice and slow on the temp road.

🫶 Again, we thank you for your patience with this project. We know it's been a nightmare for many residents and businesses (and don't think it doesn't keep US up at night, either... it does!). We will all be happy to see this project completed, and we couldn't have done it without your support.

💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

"All people have the right to live with respect and dignity, and free from fear."

At Tuesday night's City Council meeting, Mayor Fleming proclaimed October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, recognizing the devastating impacts domestic violence has on individuals, families, and our community as a whole.

Staff members from Advocates for Victims of Violence (AVV) were present to receive the proclamation. AVV Executive Director Rowena Palomar spoke about the importance of raising awareness, supporting survivors, and recognizing that the effects of domestic violence not only devastate the lives and futures of victims, but reach far beyond the individuals directly affected.

Palomar also invited the community to join AVV for its annual Women of Distinction Awards on Saturday, October 17, an October tradition recognizing women and young women who make a positive difference in our community.

Throughout October, we encourage residents to learn more about domestic violence, support survivors, and help build a community where everyone feels safe and respected.

🫂 Help is available. AVV provides confidential support, emergency shelter, advocacy, and other services for those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

🩷 VALDEZ WEARS PINK | OCTOBER 13 🩷

On Tuesday, October 13, we’re inviting Valdez to wear pink as our community comes together to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

The City of Valdez, Copper Valley Telecom, and other local organizations are joining together for Valdez Wears Pink Day. Mayor Dennis Fleming will also issue an official proclamation recognizing the day at tonight's City Council meeting (October 6).

🩷 Why do we wear pink?
• We wear pink to remember those we have lost.
• We wear pink to celebrate survivors.
• We wear pink to support those still facing breast cancer.
• And we wear pink to encourage our friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors to learn their risk and talk with their healthcare provider about recommended screening.

October 13 is also nationally recognized as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Metastatic, or stage IV, breast cancer is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It can affect both women and men, and while treatments continue to improve, there is currently no cure, which makes early detection important.

🚹 Breast cancer can affect men, too. The American Cancer Society estimates about 2,670 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2026.

So dig out your pink shirts, hats, jackets, ribbons, socks, or whatever you've got and help us turn the community pink on October 13! Check out the selection of PINK clothes over at Second Time Around Valdez AK, this week if you need a pink in your wardrobe!! 🩷

📸 We'd love to see you! Share your Valdez Wears Pink photos and tell us who you're wearing pink for.

⚡ Got a charging superpower? Turns out, you do.

It's Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Phones, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, and many other everyday devices use lithium-ion batteries. They pack a lot of energy into a small space, which means how you charge them matters. Fires from lithium-ion batteries are dangerous and hard to extinguish, which is why charging them safely is so important!!

Valdez Fire Department reminds you to:
• Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
• Charge on a hard, flat surface, not a bed, couch, or pillow.
• Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
• Stop using batteries that become very hot, swell, leak, smoke, or smell strange.
• Charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible and away from exits.

Valdez firefighters will also visit Hermon Hutchens Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week for hands-on fire safety and prevention demonstrations with students.

A few smart charging habits can help protect your home and family all year long.

🥖 Good food. Good people. Growing a community. 🫂

Since opening its doors on November 1, 1990, A Rogue's Garden has grown from a natural foods store into a longtime Valdez favorite for fresh food, quality ingredients, and a welcoming place to gather.

Owner Kathy Nielsen says it’s the relationships that have made doing business in Valdez especially rewarding: “The scenery and lifestyle are incredible, but it’s really the community relationships and loyal customers that make it special.”

Today, Rogue’s Garden offers natural and organic groceries, nutritional supplements and housewares, along with a café serving fresh-baked bread, house-made soups, sandwiches, paninis, pastries, seasonal specials, and more. And with the recent addition of a b**r and w**e license, guests 21 and older have even more to enjoy.

Beyond the food, Rogue’s Garden has spent more than three decades supporting the Valdez community through local jobs, partnerships, events, and fundraisers.
