Thanks to the people of Valatie, Niverville, North Chatham, and other areas that supported our troop's Scouting for Food initiative. We got a record haul this year, that was sorted and delivered yesterday to the Valatie Food Pantry. The picture shows a little over half of the food we collected - amazing! Great community support, as always - thanks so much! We also want to thank our partners in Cub Scout Pack 2117 that took the lead in food collection yesterday, and helped sort the food. , , , , ,

We've gotten a few questions about our annual Valatie Veterans Run this year. Unfortunately, COVID impacts to the troop are causing us to not hold the run this year. We are sorry, and appreciate all the inquiries / support. Looking forward to 2022.

Today the Troop 2114 Scouts set out almost 2000 bags around Niverville and Valatie, in support of SCOUTING FOR FOOD. We will be picking up food with Cub Scout Pack 2117 next Saturday, starting at 9 AM. The food goes to Valatie Food Pantry - it stays local and helps our community! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

And another Troop hike today in the Catskills. This time, we did a bushwhack (no marked trails except for a carriage trail that we followed in from the trailhead for 1/2 mile) up Rusk Mountain - one of the Catskill Mountains 35s (3680 ft). This gave the scouts a chance to practice their map and compass skills (although there was a decent herd path that could be followed a lot of the way). Chilly start, light accumulation of snow at the trailhead and all the way up, but yet good day for a hike - it cleared and warmed up nicely. All scouts did well (as did the parents), all made it to the summit, found the canister, logged in, and returned. Aside from scouts, parents, and siblings, a local Order of the Arrow advisor from our area also joined us. , , , , , , ,

Troop hike today in the Catskills. Slide Mountain - highest peak (4180'). While scouts have been doing some local hikes with snowshoes, and we carried them along just in case (be prepared!), microspikes worked well for most of us due to the cold temperatures. Round trip a little under 6 miles. Chilly yet perfect day for a hike - very clear, not a cloud in the blue sky! All scouts did well (as did the parents), and we did not lose any scouts, so to celebrate, we made our customary stop at Brio's Pizza in Phoenicia for some outstanding post-hike pizza. , , , , !, , , .

Today, collaborating with Cub Scout Pack 117, we collected food in the Valatie, North Chatham, & Niverville area for the Valatie Food Pantry. Last week, as part of the Boy Scout "Scouting for Food" initiative, we distributed food bags that families could fill with food to be donated. They were set out this morning, and were collected today by the scouts. While many other troops in the area altered their food collection due to COVID-19, the scouts were determined to collect in our usual manner (with safety precautions in place, of course), since this year, even more than others, people are in need!

After the scouts collected the food, it was brought to the Niverville Methodist Church, where it was unbagged, checked to make sure the expiration date was not past, marked with the expiration date for use at the food pantry, sorted by food type, loaded onto a trailer, brought to the Valatie Food Pantry, and unloaded / carried in. Every year that we do this, we are amazed with the generosity of this community, and this year was no exception with a record haul of food! Special thanks to everyone who donated, including numerous people from surrounding communities whose scouts were not collecting the food that brought bags by to us. Thanks also to the scouts, adult leaders, parents, and friends of the troop who participated. , , , , , , ,

Scouting for food bag dropoff tomorrow in Valatie, Niverville, & North Chatham. Pickup is a week from tomorrow starting at 9AM. Donated stays local - it goes to the Valatie Food Pantry. In past years, the generosity of our community has been outstanding, and we have no doubt that this year will be the same. Thanks in advance! , , , , ,

Some scouts, ex-scouts, adult leaders, parents, and friends of the troop went on a hike to Sugarloaf Mountain in the Catskills last Sunday (Roaring Kill Parking Area > Pecoy Notch Trail > Devil's Path over Sugarloaf > Mink Hollow Trail > Roaring Kill Parking Area). Great weather, great trails, saw Dibble's Quarry and sat in some great stone thrones, etc. Then we were reminded why the Devil's Path is called the Devil's Path. Great weather, great hike. 7.5ish miles. , , , , , , ,

Some of our scouts, including our newest member (and his sister), learned how to build survival shelters, and then camped out in them last night, after eating dinners made by the scouts cooked on a campfire. While the shelters looked like they would serve their purpose in adverse weather, we couldn't have asked for a better evening to sleep out in. , , , ,

Rocket night last night with our troop and one of our pack 117 cub scouts. The scouts brought their ESTES rockets that they made, and we launched them - we used over-sized engines for maximum altitude, and they went high!!! See link below for a video. Out of multiple launches with each rocket, only one rocket was not recovered, however the scouts and parents got some good exercise chasing them all over. , , , , , , ???
