Beginning Sunday May 31, parking at the Booth Lake Trailhead will be closed to reduce crowding on the Booth Lake Trail in East Vail. The closure will extend through the fall. There is also no parking in the surrounding neighborhood or at Booth Creek Park. In addition, the Vail Mountain School lot is closed in cooperation with the Town of Vail. Violators in any of these areas will be towed. Hiker drop-off and pick-up by private vehicles at the trailhead parking lot is allowed and restroom facilities are available at the trailhead.

The trailhead is served by the East Vail route of the free Town of Vail bus system with service originating from the Vail Transportation Center. Buses are currently operating on the spring schedule with service to East Vail beginning at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. followed by service every half hour until 6 p.m. when the schedule returns to hourly service. Buses will transition to the summer schedule June 8 with regular service from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Visit vail.gov/bus to check the summer bus schedule for specific times. Details on hiking options throughout Vail are available at www.discovervail.com/hike.

The hike can also be accessed via bike with bike racks as well as a Shift Bike station at the trailhead. To learn more about the Shift Bike e-bike share program, visit shift-bike.com. Hikers with dogs are encouraged to coordinate pick-up and drop-off at the trailhead or find an alternative hike to the Booth Lake Trail, as only service dogs are allowed on town buses. Backpackers can make use of overnight parking at the Vail Village, Lionshead or Red Sandstone parking garages. For more information on parking locations as well as daily and overnight rates visit www.vail.gov/parking.

We're celebrating National Public Works Week this week at the Town of Vail!

Did you know that the Town of Vail's Public Works Department represents approximately 50% of the Town of Vail's workforce? Functions include administration; engineering and construction inspection; facility maintenance; fleet maintenance; parks and open space; streets; transit; and parking.

The department maintains 32 miles of town roads and 44 cul-de-sacs, 11 miles of frontage roads, and 14 miles of recreation paths and sidewalks. The town owns and operates three parking structures and six parking lots. Vail Transit is one of the largest free bus systems in the country with 2.8 million riders per year, running from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day. The Art in Public Places program includes more than 70 works in its public art collection. There are eight neighborhood parks and two community parks – most of which include custom-designed playgrounds – and five pocket parks in Vail, as well as over 650 acres of open space. During the holidays, the department hangs over 390 wreaths, 163 rolls of 75 ft. garland and nearly 26.5 miles of light strings.

Bus riders, please note that on Wednesday, May 20, all Town of Vail Public Works staff members will be treated to lunch, this includes all town bus drivers and will require a brief suspension of transit services midday. See the link in the comments for details.

Join us in congratulating Vail Fire and Emergency Services Chief Mark Novak, who is retiring today after a 42-year career in fire services!

Novak came to Vail 11 years ago from Lake Tahoe with extensive experience in fire prevention and wildfire threat mitigation. In Vail, he built a wildfire resiliency program and led the development of the Fire Free Five program, which encourages defensible space around homes and is mandatory for all new construction.

Among his accomplishments, Novak counts changing the staffing model in the department to better align with risk. He created the Battalion Chief position, increased shift staffing, expanded the fire prevention division and created a Short-Term Rental Inspector position. Today, the department operates three fire stations with teams that provide fire suppression, EMS and specialized rescue.

Novak started his career in 1984 in San Diego County before relocating to Lake Tahoe, where he served as Fire Marshal and Assistant Chief in the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.

Novak has an unwavering commitment to creating wildfire-resilient communities and said he has considered it a privilege to serve the Vail community. Novak and his team aggressively focused on community education and assistance, including free curbside chipping, community workdays and offering property owners financial assistance to implement Fire Free Five zones.

Novak has contributed his expertise through articles on wildfire preparedness to Fire Rescue1, the information resource for the fire service.

In recent years, Novak celebrated with his team a push-in ceremony with the arrival of a state-of-the-art fire truck in 2022. In 2024, Novak, working with the U.S. Forest Service, finalized a 3,000-acre fuels reduction project in East Vail.

Vail Town Manager Russell Forrest said Novak was crucial in making Vail more resilient to wildland fire and more prepared for the unexpected. “Mark has also been a leader nationally, with his active participation in the International Association of Fire Chiefs and in the state on the Colorado Fire Commission,” Forrest said. “We look forward to Mark continuing to give us advice as a resident of Vail.”

Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Ocepek has been appointed as the interim Fire Chief while a recruitment process is underway.

Congrats, Chief Novak! We are so appreciative of the profound impact you have had on Vail!
