Education is a powerful tool for integration and empowerment. Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program successfully teaches over 300 refugees and immigrants annually, helping them gain vital language skills needed to navigate their new lives and build connections in our community. The classes are possible through a partnership with the NYS Office for New Americans and Mohawk Valley Community College.

Building a strong community is at the heart of our mission. This past year, we conducted community education classes twice per month that covered over 100 topics such as, how to write a resume, financial literacy, disease prevention, and safety strategies. Your financial support of these classes will empower refugees to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be responsible members of the community, ultimately enhancing their integration into our society. Anyone is welcome to participate in community education sessions that may be relevant for them.

The Center is committed to the health and safety of our community. The Center participates in the Health Equity Task Force facilitated by Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS), which includes many community partner organizations, and administers a Community Navigator Program. The Center’s Community Navigator program, a partnership of community-based organizations, began in April 2021 in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Partner organizations recruited refugees, immigrants, and members of underrepresented groups to serve as paid Community Navigators to implement a comprehensive outreach strategy intended to reach residents in target neighborhoods with populations disproportionately affected by the COVID pandemic. The program has evolved from addressing COVID-19 to include new partner organizations, as well as additional health priorities including heart disease & stroke prevention, nutrition, diabetes, and is expanding to address mental health. We now have 12 Community Navigators, covering 9 languages, who attend hundreds of outreach and community events, providing health education and connection to health and social support resources for the community.

The Center’s annual festival is an opportunity for everyone in the Mohawk Valley to come together and joyfully celebrate the many cultures whose traditions contribute to our one beautiful community. This year’s event is a special collaboration with Mohawk Valley Community College celebrating World Peace Day at the MVCC Utica Campus from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Every year, The Center is proud to host a vibrant community event honoring the rich cultural diversity that defines Utica—a city shaped by generations of immigrants and refugees who have made it their home. This celebration brings together residents of all backgrounds through music, dance, food, and storytelling, highlighting the global heritage that strengthens our community.

Mohawk Valley Gives is a dynamic, community-driven event dedicated to supporting local nonprofits in Herkimer, Oneida, and Otsego counties. Powered by the Community Foundation, this celebration of generosity empowers individuals, businesses, and nonprofits to come together and make a meaningful impact. Participants can donate to a wide range of nonprofits, fostering a spirit of collaboration and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Back-to-School Drive! We gave out over 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to our refugee families—from kindergarten through college. We’re beyond thrilled that this was made possible through everyone’s generosity and support.

We’re still accepting school supply donations throughout the rest of the year, so please consider donating. Thank you all for your continued generosity! Our students are ready to start the school year with confidence! 😊📚🎒

We’d also like to give a special shout-out to our amazing volunteers who helped pack and organize the backpacks. We’re truly grateful for their time and assistance!
