Over the past few days—and continuing into the next—we’ve had the opportunity to conduct valuable training thanks to First Source Federal Credit Union for allowing us to use their former Herkimer location.
On Friday, 5/1/2026, Schuyler volunteers worked with some of our newer members, giving them a chance to experience what interior firefighting operations are like before they head off to IFO class in the coming weeks.
Then on Wednesday, 5/6/2026, Schuyler volunteers joined alongside Mohawk and East Herkimer volunteers for a joint training led by Mohawk’s Unit 2. Crews focused on search and rescue, downed firefighter drills, and hose advancement. This training also allowed newer members from all three departments to work alongside experienced interior firefighters to gain hands-on experience before class.
Over the next few days, we will continue training with other agencies we regularly work with in our area.
If this type of work interests you and you’d like to learn more about the fire service or how you can help your community, we encourage you to reach out. Many local departments are actively looking for members. And if firefighting isn’t for you, there are still plenty of ways to get involved—whether it’s helping with fundraising events or supporting behind the scenes. There truly is a role for everyone.
I’d like to personally thank everyone who participated in this training. It was a huge success, and I believe everyone walked away with greater knowledge and confidence than when they arrived.
A special thank you to East Herkimer for bringing your Rescue to refill air bottles, allowing all crews to return to service immediately after training.
Thank you,
John Dickan
President, Schuyler Volunteer Fire Company Inc.
