Genesis Group Did You Know:

Genesis is hosting the 25th Annual 9/11 Remembrance Breakfast at Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro at 7:30 am on Friday September 11th. The event will also honor Police Officers, Fire Fighters, First Responders and Members of the United States Military.

We must never forget the sacrifice of the people that lost their lives and their families on that horrific day in 2001.

The 9/11 attack changed our nation forever, and the first thing that happened after 9/11 was that our nation became united like never before. United States flags were placed outside many homes and businesses. Many newspapers printed full page copies of our flag so that people could show the flag in windows.

The first baseball game in New York City to be played after the attack was at Yankee Stadium. The game was very difficult to play for the manager of the Yankees, Joe Torre, and the players on both teams. In the baseball tradition, “Take Me Out to the

Ballgame” was played during the middle of the seventh inning, but the Yankees played “America the Beautiful” instead. “America the Beautiful” is still played in the middle of the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium and many other baseball parks today.

So that we never forget 9/11, the World Trade Center in New York City has constructed a 9/11 Memorial that outlines the footprint of the Twin Towers and opened a 9/11 Museum.

Several communities and organizations throughout the Mohawk Valley hold 9/11 Remembrance Events each year so that we never forget the sacrifice of the people that lost their lives and the sacrifice of their families on 9/11.

Each year, in Utica, a floor climbing event is held at the NYS Office Building for First Responders dressed with their full working equipment.

Also in Utica, each year the “Tunnel to Towers 5K Walk and Run” is held starting at the 9/11 Memorial on the Parkway and ending at the NYS Office Building on Genesee Street. This year 2000 people participated in the Walk and Run and funds from the event are used to support families that lost a First Responder in the 9/11 attack.

Genesis Group View and Opinion:

After the long holiday weekend, school is back in session. Keep watch for children who are waiting for their bus, and more importantly - stop when the sign flashes - it means you need to stop.

According to NYS DMV School Bus Safety, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from any school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. Passing a stopped school bus from either direction is strictly illegal and endangers children crossing the street.

We can all do our part by driving safely and follow the law.
