The most effective way to stop Medicare fraud from happening is to prevent it in the first place.

For situations you can't prevent, learning how to detect potential fraud, errors, and abuse is very important.

If you find something concerning on a Medicare statement or accidentally give out your Medicare information, report it! Don't hide it and don't be ashamed. Scammers are really good at what they do and the SMP is here to help.

As a community, we can all participate in Medicare Fraud Prevention Week by looking out for our older neighbors and community members.

For example, when you are out in public, be aware of older people purchasing gift cards in large amounts. If you see this, ask questions or mention gift card scams. Many people have helped stop a scam in its tracks by stepping in and asking questions.

You might be offered “free” products like back or knee braces, food, or additional benefits for your Medicare number. That’s a scam.

The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) and the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) go together like a lock and key: one helps you get the RIGHT coverage, and the other helps you STOP the wrong scams.

SHIP counselors are your free, unbiased guides to understanding Medicare, helping you choose the plan that fits your health needs and budget. SMP empowers you to protect yourself from Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse.

In many communities, SMP and SHIP are even better together because they share the same office space, and many dedicated volunteers and staff wear both hats, serving Medicare beneficiaries through both programs. Together, they’ve got you covered from enrollment to protection.

Making beginner mistakes when signing up for Medicare can cost you money for the rest of your life. You could end up with coverage gaps, higher monthly bills, and unexpected medical costs in retirement. Many of these decisions can’t be undone, so it’s important to get them right the first time.
The good news: you don't have to navigate Medicare alone. Your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program is here to help you understand Medicare enrollment timelines, eligibility, compare plans, and appeal Medicare coverage denials. Visit shiphelp.org to learn more.
