Hewick, Home of the Robinsons since 1678

Hewick, Home of the Robinsons since 1678 Built by the Hon. Christopher Robinson, esq. in 1678

Always in the Robinson family until 2005, when Helen Nichols Murphy Battleson had to sell the ancestral home of her two youngest daughters, Rachel & Regina. The girls were raised at "Hewick", and members of the family, including their ancestor Christopher Robinson, Esq., their father, grandfather & uncle among many others are buried in the family cemetery on the property. Burials at Hewick began i

n 1666, as recorded in the Wm. & Mary quarterly, where the burial of kinsman John Vause was buried in the apple orchard at Hewick. Hewick had an archaeological dig by W&M for many years during the time of our ownership and residence 1988 to 2005.

Family Legend? has it that the first four Christopher Robinson's are
buried here at "Hewick" in the Apple Orchard or the cemetery. The W&M
Quarterly tells of John VAUS, being buried at Hewick in the Apple
Orchard, ca 1680's, and he being a kinsman of Christopher Robinson.
Christopher Robinson who died ca 13 Feb 1692/93 was on the Vestry at
Christ Church, but does not show up in the records as having been buried
there, his brother John Robinson, was the Bishop of London at the time,
and as such was the Head of the Church in VA. I was sent by the VA Hist
Society, a news article from the 1920's or 1930's, telling of how when a
road, "Lord Mott Road", was being cut thru our plantation, very near the
present cemetery, the road workmen dug up brass handles, like ones that
may have been on coffins, and a gold signet ring with the "BEVERLEY"
family crest. It was then given to the Beverley Family of Blandfield in
Essex Co., of course Christopher Robinson md 2nd Katherine Hone, the
widow of Major Robert Beverley.

This is the 1st "Hewick" Highway Historic Marker, and the 2nd, I had erected on "Hewick" when I owned it and made my home in Middlesex Co., VA. I financed the Sign from the money I raised with my "Robinson" family cookbook in the 1990. Ours Virginia Congressman, Herb Bateman came to the dedication of the sign. I will contract the HMdb.org and see if they have the other sign in their files. Helen Frederick, in California.
