A regional lawn watering ban is in effect under Stage 3 water use restrictions, affecting multiple communities across central Iowa, including Urbandale.

Central Iowa Water Works has implemented Stage 3 of its Water Use Plan broadly across its service area, which includes Urbandale along with surrounding communities. The measure temporarily prohibits residential, commercial, and government lawn watering to help manage elevated nitrate levels in source water and support ongoing treatment capacity.

The system is continuing to operate with all available resources, including nitrate treatment infrastructure, reservoir storage, and aquifer storage and recovery wells, to maintain reliable service throughout the region.

All drinking water continues to meet federal Safe Drinking Water Act standards. Additional details and updates are available at https://ciww.gov/

🚨The Central Iowa Water Works (CIWW) Board of Trustees has initiated Stage 3 of its Water Use Plan, implementing a mandatory lawn watering ban for residential, business, and government customers across the region.

To help manage elevated nitrate concentrations in source waters and ensure adequate treatment capacity, the regional system is utilizing all available resources, including the Nitrate Removal Facility, Maffitt Reservoir, and Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells.

Visit: https://ciww.gov for more information on this notice and frequently asked questions.

All drinking water produced by Central Iowa Water Works meets all Safe Drinking Water Standards.

The following communities and agencies are affected by this alert: Ankeny, Clive, Johnston, Norwalk, Polk City, Waukee, Des Moines Water Works, Urbandale Water Utility, West Des Moines Water Works, Warren Water and portions of the Xenia Water District.

Storms are likely tonight (Thursday, June 4) mainly after 6 PM through 6 AM. Heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches expected. With most of the heavy rain expected overnight, flooded roads will be difficult to see. Never drive into flooded roads!

Right now, our regional water system is operating under significant stress. We're asking residents to please voluntarily reduce outdoor water use by 50%.

đź’§ Why is Central Iowa Water Works asking customers to voluntarily reduce outdoor water use by 50%?

Right now, our regional water system is operating under significant stress.

To continue providing safe, reliable drinking water, CIWW has been:
🔹 Operating the Nitrate Removal Facility since January 6, 2026.
🔹 Withdrawing water from Maffitt Reservoir since January 19, a backup source typically reserved until Summer (if needed at all)
🔹 Using water stored in our Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells
🔹 Utilizing all seven water treatment plants

These resources are important tools that help us maintain water quality and meet customer demand, but they are not unlimited.

💡Outdoor irrigation can account for 30–40% of total drinking water use during the spring and summer.

‼️Small changes - like skipping a watering day or watering only where needed - can have an immediate impact on regional water demand.

‼️By voluntarily reducing outdoor water use by 50%, we can help preserve these critical water supplies, maintain reliable service, and ensure safe drinking water remains available throughout the summer.

Every gallon saved today helps protect our water supply for tomorrow.

Current Update (June 5, 2026): On Monday, June 8, 2026, crews are scheduled to begin corrective resurfacing work on Meredith Drive between 86th Street and 104th Street. We have heard from residents who are concerned about the impact of this work, and we understand the frustration. The City has been working with the contractor to complete the project as quickly and efficiently as possible. To help speed up the work, the contractor is bringing in additional equipment and a second crew, which is expected to reduce the overall construction timeline.

Past Update (June 2, 2026): Beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, crews are scheduled to begin resurfacing Meredith Drive between 86th Street and 104th Street, weather permitting.

This section of Meredith Drive was resurfaced last year as part of the Meredith Drive Preservation project and is partially funded by a federal transportation grant through the Iowa DOT. As part of the DOT’s standard quality-assurance process, post-construction testing found that the asphalt overlay did not meet required Iowa DOT specifications. Because of that, the overlay will be corrected.

This is corrective work under the existing project and will be completed at no additional cost to the City or Urbandale taxpayers.

The work is expected to include milling and resurfacing the asphalt overlay. Meredith Drive is expected to remain open during construction, but drivers should expect lane closures, traffic shifts, and delays. Crews currently plan to complete the four-lane roadway one lane at a time. Each lane is expected to take about two days: one day for milling and cleaning, followed by one day for paving. The full resurfacing work is expected to take about eight working days, depending on weather and field conditions. Work is expected to begin at 86th Street going westbound in the outside lane. We encourage drivers to seek an alternate route during this work.

We also know some residents have been waiting on grass restoration. This project is still open and final restoration is ongoing. The City will continue to work with the Contractor to complete the remaining grass restoration as part of project closeout.
