Our Superintendent, Leigh Anne Wenning, who also serves as Superintendent for the Shelby County Board of Developmental Disabilities, recently presented at the Ohio Association of County Boards of DD Spring Conference during the Business Managers Track.

As the shared superintendent leading both county boards for the past seven years, Leigh Anne presented on the history of the Champaign-Shelby shared services model. She discussed how the counties explored the feasibility of sharing a superintendent, how the arrangement works today, and the challenges and successes experienced along the way. She joined three fellow shared superintendents in presenting on innovative leadership and collaboration among Ohio county boards.

Together, the presenters represented 10 Ohio counties, demonstrating how partnerships and shared expertise can help strengthen services, maximize resources, and keep the focus on supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Thank you, Leigh Anne, for representing both Champaign and Shelby Counties and for sharing your experience, leadership, and commitment to the communities served by both county boards.

Three Special Olympics Ohio - Champaign County athletes recently competed at the 2026 State Powerlifting Meet in Columbus, showcasing their strength, determination, and competitive spirit against nearly 200 athletes from across Ohio.

Champaign County Special Olympics shared the following recap of the state meet:

On May 30, 2026, Champaign County Special Olympics powerlifters competed at the State Powerlifting Meet at St. John’s Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The two-day event brought together nearly 200 athletes from across the state, with Champaign County represented by three dedicated lifters. While no personal records were set at this year’s competition, the team showed tremendous strength and determination throughout the meet.

Michael Gutierrez delivered one of the most memorable performances of the meet by defending his state title and earning his third consecutive championship. Conner Jackson also successfully defended his title, capturing his second straight state championship. At just 16 years old, Conner continues to show tremendous promise for the future. Jessica Sprinkle earned a bronze medal and made everyone proud with her commitment, perseverance, and effort throughout the competition.

As the 2026 powerlifting season comes to a close, there is much to celebrate within the Champaign County Special Olympics program. In addition to powerlifting, athletes compete in basketball, volleyball, track and field, bowling, golf, and cheerleading. The program now serves more than 100 athletes across the county, and discussions are already underway about adding softball next year. The continued growth of the program reflects the hard work of the athletes, coaches, and supporters who make these opportunities possible.
