Hot cars kill children. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reminding you that no child should ever be left in a vehicle, not even for a minute. Twelve children have died from heatstroke in hot cars in 2025 – this is a matter of life or death.

Champaign Police honor one of our fallen heroes on the anniversary of his End of Watch. Four years ago, on May 19, 2021, Officer Christopher Oberheim was killed in the line of duty while protecting our community. We remember his courage. We honor his legacy. We will never forget his service. #703

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is happening now! This is our opportunity to say THANK YOU to the men and women at 9-1-1 who are always there for us and our emergencies, and our non-emergencies. These are the people who take the calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, without fail. They love what they do, despite the long hours and stressful situations they deal with. We're so very proud of our TC staff here at METCAD 9-1-1 and want to wish them all a wonderful week celebrating them! Please join us in the celebration and feel free to drop them a line and show how much the Champaign County community appreciates them. Happy TC Week!

On April 1st METCAD 9-1-1 Center went live with a new automated fire department dispatch system. The new system, “Locution”, uses pre-recorded street names, business names, address numbers, and fire department apparatus all stored in a database. Once the call for service is created in the dispatch computer by our dispatchers, the message is assembled and transmitted to first responders over fire pagers and radios. Our dispatchers are now able to remain on the phone with callers, sometimes providing life-saving instructions, at the same time the dispatch information is being transmitted by Locution. This translates to a decrease in the amount of time it takes dispatchers to process emergency calls, and also reduces response times by first responders.

This project was a big undertaking where METCAD staff spent over a year getting everything configured and tested to ensure the system would perform accurately and efficiently. So far, we’re very happy with the outcome and we believe it will have a positive effect on making the Champaign County community safer overall.
