🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨The Champaign County Sheriff's Office would like to warn residents about an ongoing phone scam targeting citizens.

Today, a resident came to the Sheriff's Office after receiving a phone call from an individual claiming that he had missed a federal court appearance and that a warrant would be issued for his arrest unless he immediately paid money through a financial institution chosen by the caller.

Fortunately, the victim became suspicious and came directly to the Sheriff's Office while the scammer was still on the phone. As soon as the scammer heard Sheriff's Office personnel speaking in the background, the call was disconnected.

The victim reported that the caller had what sounded like police radio traffic playing in the background, likely in an attempt to make the call appear legitimate. While the victim was initially concerned, he realized that law enforcement agencies do not call people demanding money to avoid arrest, nor do they arrange payments through financial institutions or gift cards to clear warrants.

⚠️ Remember:
• Law enforcement will never call and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.

• Federal, state, and local agencies do not accept payments over the phone to resolve warrants.

• Scammers often use caller ID spoofing, official-sounding language, and background audio to appear legitimate.

• If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the appropriate agency directly using a verified phone number.

Please remain vigilant and share this information with family and friends, especially elderly relatives who are often targeted by these scams.

If you believe you have been contacted by a scammer or have become a victim of fraud, contact the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

đź”’ A quick reminder from your friendly Sheriff's office: Never leave valuables in your vehicle.

Purses, wallets, fi****ms, electronics, keys, and bags left in plain sight can make your vehicle a target for theft.

If you can, take valuables with you or lock them out of sight before leaving your vehicle. Also remember to lock your doors, even if you’ll only be gone for a few minutes.

A few extra seconds can help prevent a major headache later.
