Happy National Food Bank Day! Hunger Action Month is a perfect time to celebrate—a group of citizens concerned about food insecurity took action in 1980, and formed Eastern Illinois Foodbank. EIF opened our doors in 1983, and we're currently distributing more food in one day than we did our first year of operation.

We're able to fight hunger through the generous support and dedication of our agency partners, donors, volunteers, staff, and community partners, and sister food banks in the Feeding Illinois and Feeding America networks. Thank you for making our mission possible, and empowering more local families to put nutritious meals on the table! 🧡

As a new school year begins, consider engaging your students in taking action this Hunger Action Month to help feed local families—like our friends at Westville School District #2!

During their homecoming week, each group competes in the Homecoming Food Wars to earn spirit points for donating the most food. Last year, students truly got into the competitive spirit, and donated enough food to last their pantry through Christmas.

"At one point, I recruited about 10 students to help me count the donated items because I couldn't keep up," said Westville High School social worker Maggie Potter. "I've had a lot of really good days at my job, but this was in the top 10. At the assembly where we announced the Food Wars winner we took a moment to have the kids celebrate themselves, each other, and their families for creating such a beautiful moment for the whole community."

We're grateful to these amazing students, and to all of our young neighbors who get involved in the fight against local hunger! 🧡

Each September, EIF joins Feeding America food banks across the country to raise hunger awareness and encourage our community to take action. Remember, no action is too small to make a difference in feeding our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

🧡 Make a donation! Every $1 provides three nutritious meals to local families. https://www.eifoodbank.org/action/donate/
🧡 Sign up for Operation Orange (https://www.mobilize.us/eifoodbank/event/954163/) while there are still a few spots left, or check our upcoming volunteer opportunities: https://www.mobilize.us/eifoodbank/
🧡 Hold an in-person or virtual food drive to engage your friends and family in fighting hunger. Learn more: https://www.eifoodbank.org/action/donatefood/fundraise.html
🧡 Reach out to a local pantry to see what donations or volunteer support they need.
🧡 Check out our Food Finder—you never know who in your life may need food assistance. https://www.eifoodbank.org/map.html
🧡 Wear orange on Hunger Action Day (September 29) to spark a conversation about local hunger.
🧡 Share this post to inspire your friends to join our mission of alleviating food insecurity!

Thank you for taking action this Hunger Action Month!

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾 For moms like Samantha, pantry assistance with pet food stretches her family's monthly budget. Samantha and Nick have two cats and two dogs, and that make a weekly visit to the pet food pantry at Sophia's Angels Kitchen in Peoria. “I haven’t had to spend money on pet supplies in two months!” she told us when visiting the pantry recently. “We live about 25 minutes from here, but it’s worth it—it means I have extra money to spend on food, and spend on the kids. With the hours I’m working, my SNAP has been cut to $80 a month.”

Alleviating hunger for local families includes four-legged family members. If you have dog or cat food you'd like to donate, contact your local pantry or stop by EIF! ❤️
