Sgt. 1st Class Jordan Eldridge of the 33d Infantry Brigade Combat Team participates in the Sprint-Drag-Carry portion of the Army Fitness Test with Joint Force Headquarters - Illinois on April 11 on Camp Lincoln in Springfield. Eldridge, an Infantry Soldier, has been temporarily attached to JFHQ to participate in an upcoming overseas exercise as the intelligence platoon sergeant. (U.S. Army photo by Lt. Col. Some snapshots of what the Illinois Army National Guard's 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment did during its drill weekend, March 5-8, at Marseilles Training Area. The unit conducted sling load operations with the 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment, as well as mobile command post operations, an obstacle course, and individual weapons qualification.

Congratulations to Spc. Samuel Barbagiovanni of Aurora-based C Troop, 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment, who won the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team's Best Warrior Competition from March 12-15 at Marseilles Training Area. He will now compete in State’s Best Warrior Competition later this month.

On March 15, 2009, Sgt. Christopher Abeyta, 23, of Midlothian, Illinois, Spc. Norman Cain III, 22, of Mount Morris, Illinois, and Sgt. Robert Weinger, 24, of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, died of wounds suffered when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device near Kot, Afghanistan. All three men were assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment based in Woodstock, Illinois. Our thoughts are with their families and friends as they remember them today.

The family of Illinois Army National Guard Spc. Benjamin Kash are holding a remembrance at 5 p.m., March 14, at the VFW in Waltonville. Ben was killed in a training accident in 1999 during his unit's annual training at Fort Campbell, KY. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery Regiment based in Mount Vernon.
