Urbana, IL – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the death of an inmate in custody. At
approximately 4:45am on June 13, 2026, correctional staff found an inmate unresponsive.

Correctional staff and on-site medical staff immediately began performing life-saving measures. Emergency Medical Services and the Urbana Fire Department also responded. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While the preliminary investigation shows the inmate likely suffered a medical emergency, the Sheriff has
asked the Illinois State Police to oversee the investigation of the incident, as is standard protocol for an incustody death.

The name of the inmate is not being released, pending notification of next of kin. The inmate had been in
custody since May 16 for charges related to domestic battery and had been remanded by a judge to remain
in custody until future court proceedings.

Have you ever heard of check washing?

Check washing is a form of fraud where criminals steal a check and use chemicals to remove the ink (TBH, a complete jerk move on the criminal's part). They then rewrite the check with a new payee name and often a much larger dollar amount before cashing or depositing it.

A check you wrote for $50 could suddenly become a check for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

🔍 How to Protect Yourself:
✅ Use a black gel pen when writing checks. Gel ink is more difficult to remove than standard ballpoint ink.
✅ Avoid leaving outgoing mail in your home mailbox overnight or for extended periods.
✅ Take important mail directly to a Post Office collection box or your local Post Office whenever possible.
✅ Sign up for online banking alerts and monitor your accounts regularly.
✅ Review your bank statements and report suspicious activity immediately.
✅ Consider using electronic payment methods when available.

🚨 Warning Signs:
• Missing checks from your checkbook
• Checks clearing for amounts different than what you wrote
• Unauthorized withdrawals from your account

Criminals are constantly looking for opportunities. A few simple precautions can help keep your hard-earned money where it belongs - in your account.

🐾 Meet One of Our Newest K9 Team Members: K9 Judge! 🐾

Please help us welcome K9 Judge to the Champaign County Sheriff's Office family!

Judge is an explosive ordnance detection dog handled by Court Security Officer Jessica Hurless and is assigned to the Champaign County Courthouse. While he takes his job seriously, we learned a few things about him that might surprise you...

📋 K9 Judge's Stats

🎂 Birthday: April 27, 2025

🐕 Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer

🇺🇸 Country of Origin: USA

🎾 Favorite Toy: THE ball. Not a ball. THE ball. Ball is life.

💥 Specialty: Explosive Detection

🏈 Favorite Sports Team: The Chicago Bears...I mean, the Hammond Tetanus Shots.

🚩 Biggest Red Flag: People who put pineapple on pizza. That's a war crime. Plain and simple. Judge is deeply concerned and won't trust anyone who does this.

🔥 Biggest Hot Take: Real Housewives of Atlanta is the greatest Real Housewives series ever created. You've got Kandi Burruss, who wrote "No Scrubs." Some people will argue for the OG Orange County cast, but Judge isn't buying it. Atlanta all the way. Judge don't want no scrub.

🎵 Pump-Up Song Before Work: "99 Luftballons." Not the English version. The German version. Naturally. Von 99 Luftballons!

⭐ Bonus Fact:
You'd think Judge got his name because he works at the courthouse. That's a fantastic guess...but you'd be wrong.

Judge is actually named after actor Judge Reinhold. Yes, THAT Judge Reinhold. The man who absolutely carried The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause on his back. A truly underrated performance. Probably on par with Marlon Brando's Godfather performance. I said what I said.

Welcome to the team, Judge! 🐾

It's gettin' hot in here...nay...out there

Please keep your clothes on...Don't trust Nelly's medical advice.

With heat index values climbing, it's important to take the heat seriously:

☀️ Stay hydrated - Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
🏠 Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning whenever possible.
👕 Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle - not even for a minute.
👴 Check on older adults, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness.
🐕 Make sure pets have access to fresh water and a cool place to rest.
😓 Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke: dizziness, nausea, confusion, excessive sweating, or hot, dry skin.

Remember: Hot pavement can burn paws, hot cars can become deadly in minutes, and too much sun can turn a good day into an emergency.

As Nelly always said..."Hey, must be the money." This has nothing to do with the heat index, but that song hits, add it to your playlist today.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe, Champaign County! 🌡️💧

Last Friday, June 5, law enforcement officers from agencies across Champaign County laced up their running shoes and hit the road for the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics Illinois.

The 31-mile run made its way through Fisher, Rantoul, Thomasboro, Urbana, and Champaign, carrying the Flame of Hope and raising awareness for the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Illinois.

We are incredibly grateful for the support shown by our communities along the route. From the waves and cheers to those who stopped to show their encouragement, your support helped make this event a success.

Champaign County is a special place, and we are proud to serve a community that consistently shows up for causes that make a difference.

Dear Left Lane Interstate Driver,

We see you.

Cruising peacefully in the left lane, probably listening to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen (that song is 🔥 🔥 🔥 BTW) just really soaking in every note on a beautiful Illinois summer afternoon.

Meanwhile, a line of vehicles has formed behind you that can now be seen from low Earth orbit.

What's that? A semi-truck just passed you on the right?

No worries. The vibes just keep vibing.

We just wanted to offer a friendly reminder that on Illinois interstates, the left lane is generally intended for passing. If you're just out there enjoying the scenery, contemplating life, or trying to win that hypothetical debate in your mind, the right lane is a wonderful place to do that.

Now, is this our top enforcement priority? Not even remotely.

Is it something that causes everyday drivers to stare at their windshield and mutter things we'd rather not repeat on Facebook? Absolutely.

Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/11-701) generally requires drivers on interstates and controlled-access freeways to use the left lane for overtaking and passing, with exceptions for things like traffic congestion, weather conditions, moving over for emergency vehicles, and certain highway designs.

So, to our beloved Left Lane Cruiser: we say this with all the affection of someone listening to their Uncle Steve talk about his leather pants collection at a family reunion.

Pass when you need to pass. Move over when you're done. Let traffic flow.

With Love and Gratitude,

Your fellow motorists, and Uncle Steve.
