Cedar Bog Nature Preserve was the first nature preserve in Ohio purchased with state money and is considered by many to be Ohio’s premier natural area. Owned by the state of Ohio, the site is operated by the non-profit Cedar Bog Association for the Ohio History Connection. Cedar Bog is a National Natural Landmark, one of only twenty-five in the state of Ohio – recognized for its national significa

nce. It ranks the highest of any site in the state on the Ohio Floristic Diversity Index for its great diversity of plants. The boardwalk will be closed any time the expected wind speeds may exceed 25 – 30 mph, for the safety of our visitors.

REMINDER: Our Annual Mellow Yellow Walk is this Sunday, September 13th from 12 PM until 2 PM. Naturalists will be on the boardwalk, pointing out our fall bloomers and answering your questions. You can arrive any time between 12 and 2 PM!

Saturday, August 29th at 10AM - "A Walk Through Time: A History of Cedar Bog"
Site Manager Madison Sheppard and Preserve Assistant Diana Boggs will take participants on a journey through time focusing on Cedar Bog prior to the 1900s. Join them and discover the events that led to Cedar Bog being the premier natural area it is today. $5 adults/FREE for CBA and OHC members.

One section of the boardwalk is still closed, from the north end of big sedge meadow to where the boardwalk meets the creek. A reeaaallly big maple, about 3-4 feet in diameter, needs to be cut away to get the boardwalk back down on the ground! Maddie and Diana have done a fabulous job with clearing the rest of the boardwalk. LOTS of trees came down. Grass of Parnassus are blooming in the first sedge meadow. Lots of spicebush, jack in the pulpit, and spikenard berries out! Come on out and enjoy the nice weather this week!

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve will reopen with normal hours starting tomorrow, August 13th. Unfortunately, our boardwalk sustained some major damage, so our South Loop will be the only available trail at this time. Ongoing maintenance will occur on the North Loop, so we will update you all once the boardwalk is fully operational. Stay safe!

Due to this morning’s intense severe thunderstorm, Cedar Bog Nature Preserve will be closed TOMORROW, 08/12/2026, to assess for damage and to clear the boardwalk of any debris. We will update when the site will reopen. We are sorry for inconvenience. Stay safe!
