Cedar Bog Nature Preserve was the first nature preserve in Ohio purchased with state money and is considered by many to be Ohio’s premier natural area. Owned by the state of Ohio, the site is operated by the non-profit Cedar Bog Association for the Ohio History Connection. Cedar Bog is a National Natural Landmark, one of only twenty-five in the state of Ohio – recognized for its national significa

nce. It ranks the highest of any site in the state on the Ohio Floristic Diversity Index for its great diversity of plants. The boardwalk will be closed any time the expected wind speeds may exceed 25 – 30 mph, for the safety of our visitors.

You Low-headed wrinklehead! You wavy mucksucker! You white-faced plushback! No, we’re not calling you mean names- these are names of some of the hoverflies we learned about today! Thanks MaLisa Spring for an informative and entertaining program on hoverflies! Hoverflies are easy to distinguish from bees if you know what to look for: large compound eyes, single wings that usually are straight out with a longitudinal false vein, short stubby antenna, and they can hover mid air! They’ve got spongy mouth parts so they don’t bite, or sting! They might lick you though! Hoverflies do take part in pollination but their real superpower is eating pests like aphids. Below is a picture of yet to be identified hoverfly on corn salad

Looking to develop a yard of native plants for pollinators, wildlife, and sustainability? Here are some native nurseries in Ohio that can help. If you know of others please add in comments.

Ohio native plants available at big garden centers are a small fraction of what's actually growing natively in the state. These nurseries carry the rest.

Please join us Saturday to hear entomologist MaLisa Spring talk about hoverflies and flower flies! These include those marvelous insects that mimic bees or wasps, or can hover in the air for several seconds above a flower, and you wonder what the heck they are! MaLisa was the state coordinator for the Ohio Odonata survey and the Ohio Bee survey in which Cedar Bog took part. She is an author and a frequent speaker at nature conferences in the state.
