We’re so excited for the warm, sunny months! ☀️As you and your family start enjoying the sun and spending more time outside, we want to remind you about the importance of sun protection! 🧴

Here are some helpful tips to keep your little ones safe in the sun this summer:

🌴Instead of sunscreen, keep babies 6 months and under in shaded areas and use sun-protective clothing items to protect their skin.

👒Utilize sun-protection accessories like sunhats and sunglasses.

🧴Use baby-safe sunscreens with mineral filters to prevent skin irritation.

🏖️Reapply! Make sure you take breaks in outdoor play to reset and reapply sunscreen, especially after swimming.

Baby should be placed in an empty crib, bassinet, or play-yard. The only things that are safe to be in a baby’s sleep environment are a tight-fitted sheet and a pacifier without any attachments.

Safe sleep matters for naps, too, not just at bedtime.

Sometimes daytime naps happen on busy days, in the middle of errands, visits, laundry, dishes, and everything else life brings with a baby.

But babies sleep safest every time they are placed on their backs in their own safe sleep space, even for short naps.

With a major winter storm potentially affecting dozens of states, we recognize the concerns many have about stored milk.

Updated to add: A stand alone freezer will maintain temperature for 48 hours in a power outage if unopened. A freezer compartment within a fridge will maintain temperature for 24 hours if unopened.

[Image Description] Photo of a wintery scene. Text on top reads, "Power outage? Worried about your frozen milk? Try to keep the freezer door completely shut while power is out. Once power is restored, check to see if there are any ice crystals that remain in the bags. If there are any frozen ice crystals at all, it may be refrozen." At WIC, we know that screen time and digital devices are a big concern for families. 👪 The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently updated its recommended guidelines on digital media to prevent potentially harmful effects on your family's health, safety, and well-being! 📱The AAP suggests several recommendations to support your family’s healthy use of technology:

✅Create a family technology plan and set boundaries on digital media.

✅Delay use of personal tablets.

✅Watch and play alongside your children to monitor digital content.

✅Use parental controls.

Check out the full article from the AAP, which provides even more recommendations and resources, such as a “Phone Ready questionnaire” and sample conversation starters about media: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/family-life/Media/Pages/helping-kids-thrive-in-a-digital-world-AAP-policy-explained.aspx

June brings summer’s sweetest chapter: strawberry season! 🍓Strawberries are the WIC-approved food of the month!

Strawberries are filled with antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin C, which helps support your immune system! These berries can also improve both heart health and blood sugar, making them a great healthy snack. 🫶 Strawberries are also super versatile—try including them in smoothies, salads, desserts, or homemade jams!
