Delco GOP Endorses Citizen-Led Good Government Initiative to Restore Minority Party
Representation on County Council
Delaware County, PA – The Delco GOP has announced its strong support for a bipartisan,
citizen-led initiative to amend the County’s Home Rule Charter and restore guaranteed minority party representation on Delaware County Council.
Delaware County is the only county among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties that denies minority party representation on its governing body. Under the current at-large system, the majority party holds every seat, limiting diverse viewpoints and weakening the checks and balances that have served other counties — and our nation — effectively for generations.
This citizen-driven effort would place a clear yes-or-no ballot question before Delaware County voters in the November election, giving every resident a direct voice in reforming local
government.
The proposed change would align Delaware County with the longstanding practice followed throughout Pennsylvania, ensuring that Republicans, Democrats, and independent voters alike have a voice when tax dollars are allocated, budgets are adopted, and policies affecting families, businesses, and communities are decided.
“I do not believe very many people think that one party should control every lever of government as is the case in Delaware County,” said Delco GOP Chairman Frank Agovino. “For years, leaders across party lines have recognized this flaw in the charter. We applaud the concerned
citizens organizing this bipartisan good-government initiative and stand ready to support a fair, transparent process that empowers all voters to decide.”
