Today is National IT Professionals Day and we could not let the day end without recognizing the amazing IT Team here at the Department of Corrections.

DOC expresses gratitude to the entire IT Team including Lt. Weber, MCpl. Bethancourt, MCpl. Tozzolo (not pictured) and Ms. Wokfa (not pictured) for their efforts in modernizing the agency’s technologies and automating countless duties. Director Clark presented the team with giftbags and personally thanked them for their hard work. The main office door for the IT Team was also decorated with cards signed by employees from each shift.

The Crisis Intervention Stress Management (CISM) team hosted part two of the carnival for Shift III. The initial celebration was postponed due to the rain. Thank you to all of our dunk tank volunteers and shoutout to the “carnival crew” for setting up and breaking down.

The carnival raised hundreds of dollars for CISM, allowing the program to continuously host activities and initiatives. Thank you to the awesome CISM team.

The Department of Corrections was proud to attend a Ceremony of Remembrance this morning in honor of the 25th anniversary of remembering the 9/11 terror attacks. The ceremony, held at Allen Pond Park, honored the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and recognized the first responders and service members who answered the call.

A piece of beam from the World Trade Center was displayed on the stage beside the podium. Tower Ladder 39 of the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department was also on display in the parking lot. This fire truck was utilized by the New York City Fire Department on September 11, 2001, as part of the fifth alarm to the south tower of the World Trade Center attack. Tower Ladder 39 was retired in New York and then subsequently purchased by the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department in 2003. The truck reentered service for the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department in October of 2003.

County Executive Braveboy and other county leaders recounted what 9/11 was like for them before thanking first responders for their continuous sacrifices. A moment of silence was held in honor of the victims. The event ended with a silent walk around Allen Pond Park. Thank you to the organizers of this Ceremony of Remembrance for this heartfelt gathering.

Congratulations to our second employee of the month for September, Master Corporal Whitby.

Assigned to the K9 unit, MCpl. Whitby is being recognized for his professionalism, dedication and commitment to the safety and security of the Community Release Center (CRC). For those unaware, the CRC is a facility located on the same street as the jail that provides an alternative to incarceration by allowing individuals the opportunity to work a job or apply for employment while serving their sentence.

MCpl. Whitby consistently checks in with Community Release Center staff to ensure their safety. Whether assisting with resident pat searches, searches of the facility, or responding to situations that require additional support, MCpl. Whitby never hesitates to help. He is always willing to step in without hesitation and then return to his own responsibilities, demonstrating an exceptional team-first attitude. His confident and professional presence, situational awareness, and sound judgment help create a safer environment for everyone.

MCpl. Whitby exemplifies teamwork, leadership and service through his willingness to support others, coupled with his dedication to maintaining a safe and secure environment.

For these reasons and many more, MCpl. Whitby is one of the September employees of the month.

Congratulations to one of our employees of the month for September, Master Corporal Hammer.

Assigned to the K9 unit, MCpl. Hammer is frequently patrolling the perimeter of the facility to ensure the safety of staff and visitors. On July 14, a woman and her young passenger were experiencing car troubles outside the facility after hitting the sidewalk and knocking something loose in the undercarriage.

Even though this was a 90º day with a heat index feeling closer to 100º, MCpl. Hammer immediately exited his vehicle and positioned himself on the hot asphalt to look under her car. He then went to his vehicle before returning with tools and accessories. MCpl. Hammer’s act of kindness and service shows how much he values assisting those who are in need.

For these reasons and many more, MCpl. Hammer is one of the September employees of the month.

The Prince George’s Department of Corrections was proud to participate in the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival. PGDOC command staff enjoyed their time at the festival engaging with residents. A special thank you to Sgt. Hand who served as the Elevate Mascot!

The Crisis Intervention Stress Management team’s (CISM) Carnival was so much fun earlier this week. The carnival, which was held on the perimeter of the facility, was a fundraiser for the CISM program.

Staff members were lined up to purchase tickets for a chance to dunk Director Clark and others. Director Clark even wore his favorite Eagles jersey to give some extra motivation at the dunk tank.

Food trucks, funnel cakes and other treats were also available. The carnival wrapped up with people picking up water guns and having a free for all. Nobody was safe from the water guns.

Thank you to the CISM team and everyone who helped make this carnival a successful event!

The event is a fundraiser for the CISM team, so it can host events and activities in the future. Staff bought tickets and lined up for a chance to dunk the Director and other officers.
