Before you launch this spring, schedule a free vessel safety check.

A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a courtesy examination of your boat (vessel) to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. The volunteer VSC examiner may also make recommendations and discuss safety issues that can make you a safer boater. No citations will be given if the boat does not pass. The examiner will supply you with a copy of the evaluation so that you may follow up with any recommendations. Vessels that pass the examination will be able to display the distinctive VSC decal. The decal does not exempt boaters from law enforcement boarding but indicates to boarding officers that the boat has been examined and found to be in compliance with safety equipment regulations.

To request a VSC, go to the USGC Auxiliary page at: www.cgaux.org
Click on the side tab “Get A Vessel Safety Check.” Fill out the form and submit. A VSC examiner will reach out to you

The Flotilla was at the 2026 Quiet Adventures Symposium on 28 Feb at the MSU Pavilion. Quiet Adventures is dedicated to promoting non-motorized outdoor recreation and resource conservation. It was great to share stories with former, and a few future, “Coasties.”

While our invasive species display was a hit, it was our balancing game of “Don’t Tip the Trash” that really stole the show. The point of the game is to remind everyone that all trash must be contained on board and disposed of at approved onshore facilities. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2027 Quiet Adventures as we help to raise public awareness and promote public concern for the water resources of the Great Lakes Region.

Members of the Flotilla greeted over 4000 members of the public at the Lansing Boat and RV Show at the Farm Bureau Pavilion at the MSU January 15-17.

Our Man Overboard mannequin OSCAR made an appearance and kids of all ages tried their hand at Not Tipping the Boat. The theme for our booth was "WEAR IT" as we stressed proper life jacket usage, boater safety education, and how to have fun afloat, safely. Our next stop will be at the Quiet Adventures show, February 28. Hope to see you there.

Members of the Lansing Flotilla joined with the Traverse City Flotilla for an orientation to Coast Guard Air Operations at the USCG Air Station Traverse City on Saturday. Rio Annis from Lansing showed us how a new pilot should look in a MH60 helo. Grant Schafer took copious pictures while the group of new Auxiiarists listened to an excellent presentation by active duty pilot, LTJG Betts. Thanks to the entire crew at the Air Station for a great day, including a super lunch at the galley.

Edie is staffing the Flotilla Booth, reminding everyone to wear their life jackets at the Great Outdoors Jamboree on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Lake Hudson Recreation Area in Lenawee County.

The annual Jamboree offers a chance to learn about Michigan outdoor recreation opportunities and participate in a variety of activities, including our hit game – Don’t Rock the Boat.

Drowning can happen to anyone, even strong swimmers. Don’t take chances - prioritize your safety on the water by always wearing a life jacket. It’s your lifeline in unexpected moments.
