While the Miami Conservancy District is many times larger than Hunter’s Run Conservancy, their recent post on their page holds true for any flood protection system, including Hunter’s Run:
This is a powerful example of why flood protection benefits extend far beyond the properties that would actually get wet.
Flooding has closed I-70 east of Columbus this morning as the South Fork Licking River approaches a record crest. Even if your home or business never floods, a major interstate closure can affect your commute, emergency response, deliveries, employees, customers and the movement of goods across an entire region.
Here in the Miami Valley, MCD’s flood protection system helps protect hundreds of miles of roads, along with hospitals, water and wastewater facilities, businesses, utilities and other critical infrastructure. And major transportation corridors including I-70 and I-75 pass through the region we protect.
That’s an important part of the value of regional flood protection: the benefits don’t stop at the edge of the floodplain.
When roads stay open, businesses can operate. Employees can get to work. Emergency responders can get where they need to go. Supply chains keep moving. Hospitals and utilities remain accessible.
We’re seeing across Ohio and Indiana this week just how far the disruption from flooding can reach.
Flood protection is community protection — and regional economic protection, too.
