Elder Abuse Awareness Month is observed every June to educate the public about elder abuse, promote prevention, and encourage reporting of suspected abuse. It highlights the mistreatment of older adults, which can include physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as neglect and abandonment. The month-long observance aims to raise awareness about the prevalence of elder abuse and its serious consequences, including depression, isolation, poor health outcomes, and even premature death.

National Loving Day is on June 12, and the name for this day is an interesting one. The holiday is, of course, about spreading love but, ironically, it also references the names of Mildred and Richard Loving, who fought against the laws confining them and everyone else from marrying interracially.

Earlier this week, counselors Laurie and Tara traveled to Harrisburg to participate in a Victim Behavior Expert Witness Training held at Widener University. Great job, ladies!

This specialized training enhances our ability to educate professionals, support survivors, and provide expert insight into victim behavior and trauma responses. By deepening their knowledge of how trauma can impact memory, disclosure, and behavior, Laurie and Tara are better equipped to advocate for victims and help dispel common myths and misconceptions that can affect a survivor's path to justice and healing.

June is Men's Mental Health Month, a time to recognize that men experience trauma, abuse, sexual violence, and mental health challenges too.

Many male survivors never disclose their experiences due to stigma, fear of not being believed, or pressure to "be strong." As a result, they often carry the effects of trauma alone.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness—it's a sign of courage. Healing begins when survivors know they are safe, supported, and heard.

As victim advocates, we stand with all survivors. Everyone deserves access to support, resources, and a path toward healing, regardless of gender.

If you or someone you know is struggling after experiencing violence or abuse, help is available. You are not alone.

Many adults were taught that "good children always obey adults." While respect and listening are important, teaching children to be unquestioningly obedient can leave them vulnerable to manipulation, abuse, and exploitation.

Children should know that they have the right to:
✅ Say "no" to unwanted touch, even from someone they know.
✅ Ask questions when they feel uncomfortable or confused.
✅ Tell a trusted adult if someone asks them to keep a secret that doesn't feel right.
✅ Trust their instincts when a situation feels unsafe.
✅ Speak up if an adult's behavior makes them uncomfortable.

Instead of teaching blind obedience, we can teach children critical thinking, body safety, healthy boundaries, and how to identify trusted adults who will listen and help.

The goal is not to raise children who obey without question—it's to raise children who are safe, confident, and empowered to advocate for themselves.
