or Iowa peace officers, to coordinate training and to set standards for the law enforcement service. The Academy also provides training to jailers in county jails and city holding facilities and to telecommunicators throughout the state. In addition, the Academy administers a program of psychological testing of applicants for law enforcement positions, approves regional training programs, establishes hiring standards for peace officers, and provides audio-visual resources to law enforcement training and educational institutions.

Another busy week at the ILEA! 💪

Class leadership candidates kicked things off with leadership challenges designed to test their ability to motivate and guide fellow recruits through mental and physical tasks.

Class 327 focused on Medical and CPR training, while Class 328 worked through Motor Vehicle Law, TIMS, and Traffic Stop training. 🚔

🎉 The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy is proud to join in recognizing the eight sworn and professional staff members from Des Moines Police Department and ILEA who were honored yesterday with the Respect for Law Award by the Optimist Club of Des Moines.

For nearly 30 years, this award has celebrated individuals whose dedication, professionalism, and service make Iowa a better place to live and work. We extend a special congratulations to Brenda Smith and Kelli Oliver on this well-deserved recognition. Their commitment to excellence and contributions to law enforcement training continue to make a lasting impact on Iowa's law enforcement community and the officers they help prepare for service.

It was a busy week of hands-on training and skills application. Recruits worked through Motor Vehicle Law and vehicle stops, 🚑 medical training, fi****ms, and defensive tactics focused on pressure points and control holds.

This week, recruits participated in their second round of reality-based scenarios, vehicle searches, and a Defensive Tactics skills check, putting their classroom training into action. 🚔💪

Recruits continue to make great progress in developing command presence while learning firsthand the challenges of de-escalating interactions with disgruntled citizens. These hands-on exercises are designed to strengthen the skills essential for a successful career in law enforcement.

🚓Classes 327–328 experienced many important firsts as they moved deeper into the patrol phase of the academy. Some of their training included legal classes, patrol techniques, verbal defense, report writing, precision driving, and their first realistic glimpse into life on the job through a basic theft scenario exercise. From orientation, ethics & professionalism, and report writing to defensive tactics, PT testing, and attending the annual Peace Officer Memorial, they’ve already learned so much about what it means to serve as a law enforcement professional.
