The Spokane City/County Historic Preservation Office protects and interprets the historic and architecturally significant properties within Spokane.

The Spokane City/County Historic Preservation Office and the Spokane Historic Landmarks Commission are local government programs that share responsibility for the stewardship of historic and architecturally significant properties within the City of Spokane and unincorporated areas of Spokane County. The HPO also manages the Spokane Register of Historic Places, conducts design review for designated historic buildings and runs Certified Local Government programs. The City of Spokane Historic Preservation Office is dedicated to furthering the mission of preservation in Spokane by chronicling the incredible history, architecture and people of the region!

Are you an architect, archaeologist, or preservation construction specialist? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

Applications are now open on the City of Spokane’s website for three professional positions on the Spokane Historic Landmarks Commission:

• Architect – term begins January 1, 2027
• Archaeologist – term begins January 1, 2027
• Preservation Construction Specialist – position is open now

The Spokane Historic Landmarks Commission is a little different from other City boards and commissions because we are a joint commission with Spokane County. That means our professional applicants do not need to live within the City of Spokane.

We’ll also have a County-at-Large position advertised on the County’s website soon. This position is for someone who lives outside the City of Spokane and has an interest in historic preservation.

When a building is torn down in Spokane County, permit fees collected from the demolition are redirected to a fund that helps preserve the facades of historic structures that still remain.
