Christmas will be here before you know it, and last week, Station #1 personnel assisted our local Toys for Tots organization in assembling bicycles that some local children will receive as gifts this year.

We appreciate these personnel taking time to help this great cause.

As the season gets closer, our fire stations will serve as drop-off points for toys again this year. Look for more info in a few weeks!

After months of planning, design work, and securing funding, we are proud to announce the completion of our new classroom facility at the Florence Fire Training Center.

The new facility features a large classroom with seating for up to 40 students, and a smaller classroom with a capacity of 20. These new classrooms significantly increase the space available to us for conducting training and development for our personnel, as well as for hosting classes as an Alabama Fire College Regional Training Center.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Mayor and City Council for their support of this project, and for recognizing the value it brings to our department, and the training opportunities that we are able to provide to firefighters from across the state.

Just before 5:30 a.m. on 9/26, Engines #1, #3, #4, Tower #1, and Battalion #1 responded to a report of a structure fire in the 500 block of South Blair Street.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire showing from the residence, and immediately began working to extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control in ten minutes.

The lone resident was able to escape prior to our arrival. He was treated for smoke inhalation by AMR Lifeguard on the scene, and released. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by our Fire Prevention Bureau.

Station #1’s crew enjoyed a visit this morning from the Mars Hill Bible School T-K class. These students learned about the job of a firefighter and got an up close look at a fire truck and all of the tools that firefighters use.

The students also got to see a firefighter fully dressed in protective gear. This helps them understand that a fully protected firefighter may look a little scary at first, but he is there to help! The parents in attendance also gained some knowledge as to how to make their homes more fire-safe.

A visit from Sparky topped off the morning as the students got to shake his hand and get their picture with him.

If you or your group would like to schedule a visit to one of our fire stations, please call our administrative office at 256-760-6475.
