Cadets in the Civil Air Patrol are eligible for up to five orientation flights (O-Flights), giving them a chance to experience aviation firsthand and learn from qualified pilots. Cadets from the Crazy Horse Squadron in Custer recently participated in orientation flights and helped clean and refuel the aircraft afterward. Three of the cadets were taking their very first flight, and judging by the smiles on their faces, they had an unforgettable experience!

85 for 85, day 37. As we celebrate the 85th anniversary of Civil Air Patrol, today's photo highlights CAPs 1970's Radiological testing. Did you know? During the Cold War, Civil Air Patrol pilots played a key role in aerial radiological monitoring missions. Flying aircraft such as the Cessna 172 and Bird Dog, CAP crews helped detect and map radioactive contamination, providing critical information for emergency response and civil defense planning. These missions remained an important part of CAP's service through the 1970s.

The cadets of the Lookout Mountain Composite Squadron recently completed their monthly mile run.
Physical fitness is an important part of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. To earn promotions, cadets must show continued improvement in fitness areas such as the mile run, curl-ups, push-ups, and sit-and-reach flexibility.
Great effort by all of our cadets as they continue working toward their personal fitness and leadership goals!

Members from across the South Dakota Wing gathered in Sioux Falls recently for operational mission training that included both air and ground disaster-relief photography exercises. Training activities featured a successful search for a missing person, aerial photography of infrastructure in local industrial areas, drone photography simulating damage assessments around Sioux Falls, and locating an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) during a simulated aircraft accident scenario.

Images show cadets measure a plumb line to determine how close the river water level was below a bridge, and the flight track of an aircraft as it circled a practice emergency locator transmitter. Using radio direction-finding procedures, the aircrew was able to pinpoint the transmitter's location as part of the training exercise.
