Members of the consortium are concerned. On March 21 (and March 27) the Countywide Juvenile Justice Consortium (CJJC) made requests that Shelby County Juvenile Court and detention center share its plan to lower COVID-19 risk and requested the release of youth with non-violent offenses and upcoming release dates be released from custody. The CJJC also requested better communication on the court’s plans to the public. The CJJC has not yet received this information but will update as information becomes available.

The coronavirus is already appearing in juvenile detention centers. Experts say it'll get worse unless children are released.
