🔥 October is Fire Prevention Month, and Georgetown firefighters are busy making safety fun! 🚒

Each year, our firefighters visit elementary schools to teach important fire and life safety lessons. Along with showing off their gear and fire trucks, some of our crew members dress up as funny characters and bring safety messages to life through an interactive show. The best part? Students remember the characters and the lessons they teach long after the show is over!

🎮 This year’s show is Minecraft-themed! Our firefighters wrote an original show and built a custom set that travels with them to elementary schools across Georgetown.

In just 23 minutes, students learn about:
🏠 Practicing home fire escape drills and choosing a family meeting place
🚪 Stranger danger and staying safe
📞 What to know when calling 911
🧸 The difference between tools and toys
🔥 And more important safety lessons!

We love finding creative ways to connect with kids, make learning memorable, and help keep our community safe. Because when it comes to fire safety, learning the right lessons today can make a difference tomorrow! ❤️🚒

⚡🔋 CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY! 🔋⚡

The Georgetown Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention theme: “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!”

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, from phones and tablets to e-bikes and power tools. But charging them incorrectly can create a serious fire risk. The good news? A few simple habits can help keep you and your family safe! 🦸

🔌 Power up safely with these tips:

✅ Use the right charger. Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

✅ Charge on a hard surface. Tables, desks, and floors allow heat to escape. Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, pillows, or other soft surfaces.

✅ Know the warning signs. Stop using a device if its battery becomes unusually hot, smells strange, makes popping noises, changes shape or color, or produces smoke. If it is safe to do so, move it away from anything that can catch fire. Never handle a smoking or actively overheating battery.

✅ Unplug when fully charged. Avoid leaving devices plugged in longer than necessary.

✅ Give larger batteries extra care. When possible, charge e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outdoors, away from exits and anything that can catch fire. Always follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions.

✈️ Traveling by plane? Keep portable chargers and devices where you and the flight crew can monitor them, such as on the tray table when permitted. Never charge devices in overhead compartments, and follow airline rules for portable chargers, e-cigarettes, and vapes.

🔥 Remember: Safe charging is your superpower! Small everyday choices can help prevent fires and protect the people around you.

Plot twist: We didn’t actually win an HGTV Property Brothers giveaway... but Station 1 is officially getting a major makeover!

In all seriousness, Station 1 is undergoing a long-overdue overhaul. Construction will take roughly 12-18 months.

What does this mean for operations?

Emergency Response: Our response times and service availability will not be impacted. Station 1 has relocated next door to a temporary facility to ensure seamless coverage for our district.

Community Visits: Station tours and in-person visits will be paused at Station 1 until construction wraps up.
