Mental health experts say social media websites are game-changers when it comes to reaching out to vets. While they shouldn’t be viewed as replacements for treatment, they are providing vets and their families an outlet for referrals, advice and helpful programs. The sites have also become a way for vets to keep in touch and share their experiences with others: something the experts say is invaluable for recovery.

An analysis by Armed Services Committee shows that cuts could shrink the Army and Marine Corps by some 150,000 troops and leaving fewer warships and combat aircraft to project U.S. power around the world. The USN would need to take two carrier battle groups out of service and the USAF would lose a third of its fighters. The USMC would no longer be able to maintain forward-deployed amphibious forces around the world.

Defense spending cuts could leave the Pentagon with its lowest share of the budget since WWII.

Sen Greg Evers filed Senate Bill 310 during the 1st week of committee meetings for the 2012 legilsative session to provide for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to issue Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross and Air Force Cross license plates, without requiring payment of the license tax, to service men and women who received those awards.

During the 1st week of committee meeting for the 2012 legislative session, Sen Greg Evers cosponsored Senate Bill 94 that would allow priority course registration for veterans who meet eligibility requirements at Florida College System institutions and state universities. It would also encourage independent post-secondary schools to provide priority course registration for veterans.

Sen Greg Evers has filed or cosponsored three veterans’ bills during the 1st week of the 2012 legislative session. The “T. Patt Maney Veterans’ Treatment Intervention Act,” provides that veterans found to have committed a criminal offense may have a hearing on that issue before sentencing, when they maintain that the offense resulted from PTSD or other psychological problem that stemmed from service in combat.

Welcome to Florida: The 7th Special Forces Group has completed its $500 million relocation from Fort Bragg to Eglin Air Force Base. About 1,500 soldiers made the move to the Air Force base near Fort Walton Beach, according to the Fayetteville Observer.
