The Ward 1 Artist in Residence, Michelle Myrose, has been planning and facilitating monthly art workshops for the seniors at El Rio Neighborhood Center. This monthly initiative and collaboration with Parks and Rec, through the Senior Programs and Senior Activity Card allows elders to acquire an activity card for $25 annually. This pass covers various activities such as art, exercise, nutrition, classes, and community building. In August, Michelle facilitated a Mexican yarn art design, and today’s workshop was nichos! Occasionally, other staff from the team will join Michelle to help her coordinate the class and assist the elders with their projects. My office and I have been making an intentional effort to stay connected with the El Rio seniors since federal funding for their lunch program was cut last year. Between the monthly workshops and Budget de la Gente funding helping support their community lunches, we are grateful to play a part in keeping this important space for connection going strong.

What if our communities weren’t built around cars? 🚲🚌🚶
Week Without Driving invites you to experience, reflect, and share what daily life looks like without a car.
For millions of people, that’s not a challenge, it’s everyday life. Age, disability, income, and other barriers keep many neighbors from getting behind the wheel.
Join my team and I for 1 week to rethink how we get around and explore how accessible transportation can connect people, strengthen neighborhoods, and make daily life better for everyone.
Visit https://weekwithoutdriving.org/ to learn more about this National movement, it’s impact and how to participate. Swipe through to learn about some local ways to get involved for the week ahead! ➡️ Week Without Driving

Thank you to Veterans Power American for bringing together Tucson leaders, both in the city and in the community. I always appreciate the opportunity to co-work alongside young people and learn from their passion, enthusiasm, and vision for the future! We each want to protect our most precious natural resource – water. 💧 🌀Thank you to the constituents who took their evening to have dinner with us and discuss Ordinance No. 12268, public power, state preemption, and what’s next in our fight against big tech and data centers. Last night’s Mayor and Council meeting included two Parks naming items — one to rename Joaquin Murrieta Park to Salomon Baldenegro Park, and one to honor Stacy Redondo with a new amenity. After hosting a Community Plática in August that surfaced real concerns about process, gender-based violence, and the erasure of collective movements, I voted yes on the Stacy Redondo Fields naming but moved for an immediate moratorium on further park re/namings until that community input shapes our new policy. This wasn’t personal — it’s about building trauma-informed policy that lasts for future generations. I know it’s a hard outcome for some in Ward 1, but I stand by it. 🌵✊🏽
