🚤 THREE MISSIONS. TWO DAYS. ONE COMMITMENT: BRINGING EVERYONE HOME SAFELY. 🚤

Some missions don't end when the first call is over.

What began as a report of an overdue fisherman near the junction of Skull Creek and Trenchards Inlet turned into three separate missions over two days and serves as a reminder that on the water, things don't always go according to plan.

When Fripp Island Sea Rescue first responded, our crew located the boater stranded high and dry on a remote shoreline. After assessing the situation, the boater chose to remain with his vessel overnight and wait for the next high tide, believing he could refloat the boat on his own. Our crew confirmed he had supplies and water and continued coordinating with Beaufort Water Search & Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard throughout the evening.

The following morning, family members and the Coast Guard became concerned when the boater had not returned home and could no longer be reached.

Before sunrise, Rescue 1 launched again.

Our crew located the boater, transported him safely back to Fripp Marina, and reunited him with his family. Together, they developed a plan to return later that day on a significantly higher tide in hopes of recovering the vessel.

But the mission wasn't over.

Later that afternoon, Rescue 1 launched for a third time to transport the owner back to his boat.

Upon arrival, the crew discovered something unexpected.

The vessel was no longer stranded. It was floating offshore alongside another boat occupied by individuals who stated they had found the unattended vessel and were waiting for authorities. They informed our crew they had contacted law enforcement and had been instructed to remain with the boat.

As Rescue 1 coordinated with Command and worked to verify the situation, the individuals departed the scene.

The boat owner was then reunited with his vessel and safely escorted back toward Fripp Marina.

Looking back on the incident, the captain and crew recognized an important lesson. While the intentions of the individuals involved can never be known with certainty, the circumstances served as a reminder that not everyone encountered on the water is necessarily who they appear to be. Situational awareness, communication, and verifying information are critical parts of every mission.

This mission wasn't about a dramatic rescue. It was about persistence.

Three separate missions.
Multiple launches.
Two days of coordination.
Volunteers assisting from Rescue 1, from the dock, by phone, and behind the scenes.

And through it all, one goal remained the same: ensuring the boater, his vessel, and every member of our crew made it home safely.

🚤 A Long Night. Challenging Multiple Missions. A Successful Outcome. 🚤

What began as a report of an aground boater in Harbor River turned into one of the most challenging missions Fripp Island Sea Rescue has faced in recent memory.

On Tuesday June 9th, shortly after 7:00 PM, Beaufort 911 notified FISR of a boater in distress whose vessel had become stranded in shallow water and oyster beds in the SW section of the Harbor River. Our Rescue 1 crew launched and responded immediately, while an additional FISR member launching their personal watercraft to attempt access from a different direction.

Unfortunately, the stranded vessel was completely inaccessible from all directions due to extremely shallow water and oyster beds. Communications were lost when the boater's phone battery died. Working alongside Beaufort Water Search & Rescue, and the U.S. Coast Guard, efforts continued throughout the evening to monitor the situation and ensure the boater's safety.

Then, at 4:29 AM, the second mission began again.
At the request of the USCG, FISR launched Rescue 1 before dawn to conduct a wellness check. With updated information provided through the coordinated efforts of BWSAR and the USCG, our crew located the boater. He had attempted to free his vessel as the tide returned but became stranded a second time. He was dehydrated, disoriented, and lost after spending the night alone on the mud flats. After a health assessment, an FISR crew member boarded the vessel, guided it safely through the shallow waters, and together with Rescue 1 escorted the boater home to his rental dock on Port Royal Sound.

This mission required the efforts of multiple FISR volunteers over two separate operations, including members aboard Rescue 1, members assisting remotely by phone, members using their own vessels to help gather information, and ongoing coordination with our emergency response partners.

It is also a reminder that Island Sea Rescue is only one part of the larger team of first responders serving Fripp Island and the surrounding waters. We are grateful for the support and partnership of Beaufort Water Search & Rescue, Beaufort County 911, the U.S. Coast Guard, Fripp Island Security, Fire Department, EMS, and the many others who work together to keep our community safe.

Most importantly, the story ended with a safe outcome.

Fripp Island Sea Rescue is an all-volunteer organization. Every member who responded to this mission did so as an unpaid volunteer dedicated to helping others. We receive no funding from Beaufort County and rely on the support of our community to continue serving as "911 On The Water.”

To everyone involved—thank you for your teamwork, perseverance, and commitment to serving others.

🚤 Community support comes in many forms.

On Wednesday, June 3rd, two members of Island Sea Rescue assisted Fripp Island resident Greg Anderson with transporting his Key West boat from the marina to the lift at his canal home, where R2 is based.

While not a rescue mission, these types of “service calls” are another way our volunteers support our island community.

We’d also like to thank Greg for his ongoing generosity and support of FISR, including allowing R2 to be based on his lift when available, positioned there to quickly respond to rescue needs in the Skull Creek Inlet area. We truly appreciate your partnership and support of our mission. 🌊💙
