Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating the millions of Jews, homosexuals, and disabled people who were killed by the N**i regime.

On this day in 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest N**i concentration camp, was liberated by Soviet troops. Six more camps were discovered and liberated by Allied troops in the following months. In 2005, the United Nations designated that day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 60th anniversary of the liberation. Each year, the UN urges every member nation to honor the memory of Holocaust victims, and encourage the development of educational programs about the Holocaust to prevent future acts of genocide.
