Our Police Department is running one of the Special Olympics Torch legs from Macy's to the Lyndhurst line beginning about 11am. today 5-26-26!

If you are able, come cheer them on!!!

Tomorrow is UHPD’s leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics!!! Our start time is around 11am. Could be earlier, could be later. Times depend on runners.

We will be headed from Macy’s to the Lyndhurst border!

The start of this holiday to honor those that died for freedom began with those that understood how precious it is.

Most people know Memorial Day as the as the day we celebrate the men and women who died serving our country, but many don’t know Black Americans played a major role in creating the tradition. 🇺🇸✊🏾

Historians say one of the earliest Memorial Day ceremonies happened on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, just weeks after the Civil War ended. Newly freed Black Americans reportedly gathered to honor more than 250 Union soldiers who died in a Confederate prison camp and were buried in a mass grave.

According to historical accounts, freed Black residents reburied the soldiers properly, decorated their graves with flowers, and led a massive parade with thousands of people, including Black Union troops and schoolchildren. Some historians now recognize the event as one of the first Memorial Day commemorations in U.S. history.

So while many celebrate Memorial Day with cookouts and vacations, the holiday’s roots are also deeply tied to Black history, remembrance, freedom and honoring those who sacrificed their lives. 🇺🇸

Please consider supporting the University Heights Police Department as they run to raise funds for the Special Olympics. They are a part of the law enforcement challenge. They will be running on 5-26-26 so there still is time to donate. Just look up their team at the donation page and donate from there!!

New Rubbish/recycling schedule. Routes are combined to allow for trash to be picked up in 3 days - Monday through Wednesday. Recycling remains every other week.

This is being done to provide more time for the crews to work on other items throughout the city.

Polls are open at the Board of Elections, 1803 Superior, all week or at your polling place from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm May 5th. This decides who will be the candidates in the November election.
