It is with sadness that the University City Fire Department announces the death of Retired Assistant Chief Dave Crismon.

David James Crismon was a loving husband, father, Pop Pop, brother, son, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend to many. He fought a hard fight but lost his battle with cancer on August 18th, 2023, at the age of 54. David was surrounded by family, friends, and his faithful dog, Mo, during his last moments.

David started serving in the fire profession in his early teens. He began as a volunteer firefighter in Potosi, MO before joining the University City Fire Department. He spent 30+ years serving as a firefighter/paramedic, eventually retiring as Assistant Chief. Other accomplishments include achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and obtaining his Master of Science Degree, majoring in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management.

David enjoyed traveling to many beach destinations with his wife. He was an avid collector of vintage treasures, his favorite being his Star Wars memorabilia. One of his favorite pastimes was playing Star Trek Fleet Command with his large gaming community. David loved spending time with his family and grandchildren and was excited about his new grandson arriving this fall.

He was a true firefighter and always put others first. He took pride in his leadership roles and mentoring new fire recruits. Not only did he build a large community of friends and co-workers, he always kept us laughing and we will miss all of his jokes. So many were very honored to be able to call him a friend and be a part of his illustrious life.

David is survived by his wife, Kara; son, Luke (Lauren) Arens; daughter, Mallory (Travis) Hamilton; mother-in-law, Katherin Metzler; grandchildren Camden & Conner, and soon to be born, baby Leo. He is also survived by his mother, Carolyn Crismon; sister, Sue (Bob) Nabors; brother, Steve (Lisa) Owen; nieces, nephews, and friends.

David was preceded in death by his father, John Owen; step-father, James Crismon; step-sister Cheryl Crismon; and father-in-law, Ronald Metzler.

“Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not.” -Jedi Master Yoda

A graveside ceremony will be held on Monday, August 28th at 11am at Sunset Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Affton, Missouri.

A celebration of life will follow at O’Fallon Brewery from 1pm-6pm in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The BackStoppers Inc., or DeGreef Hospice House at Mercy Hospice South.
