🚒 It’s been a BUSY week here at the Union Volunteer Fire Department!🚒

For our little department, this has been one of those weeks that reminds us just how much our volunteers are called upon to do.

We started the week with a propane tank that had a tree fall on it, shifting it off its base. From there, our members responded to three medical calls throughout the week, followed by a motorcycle vs. car accident on I-84 where LifeStar was requested to transport the patient to the hospital.

Then, just a couple of hours later, our members were called back out to a car fire on I-84.

And as if that wasn't enough, we had another medical call in town this morning.

That’s a propane tank incident, three medical calls, a serious motor vehicle accident, a car fire, and another medical call — all in just one week.

For a small department like ours, that’s a lot of calls in a very short amount of time.

Behind every one of those calls are volunteers who leave their homes, families, jobs, hot meals, and whatever else they may be doing to answer the call when their community needs them. They do it without hesitation and without expecting anything in return.

❤️ We are incredibly proud of our members and grateful for their dedication.

And to our mutual aid departments, dispatchers, LifeStar, and all of the other agencies who work alongside us — thank you for always being there when we need you.

Most importantly, thank you to the residents of Union for continuing to support your volunteer fire department. Your support means more than you know.

Please remember to give our volunteers a little extra patience and appreciation when you see those flashing lights and hear those sirens. They’re on their way to help someone who needs them.

🚒 Training Today: Agricultural Extrication 🚜

Today our crews participated in hands-on extrication training involving an overturned tractor. We worked through a couple of different scenarios and practiced several different lifting techniques to safely stabilize the equipment and gain access to the patient.

Training included the use of air bags, struts, cribbing, and other stabilization equipment, allowing our firefighters to practice different approaches and techniques depending on the situation.

You may also notice in some of the pictures that training isn’t just about the rescue itself. Our crews took time to rest, hydrate, and critique each scenario after the rescue. Reviewing what went well, what could be improved, and how we can work more efficiently is an important part of every training session.

Hands-on training like this keeps our firefighters prepared for the unique challenges we may face when responding to agricultural incidents in our community.

❤️ THANK YOU, UNION AND BEYOND! ❤️
The members of the Union Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and came out to support our Annual June Chicken BBQ.

Because of your incredible support, we sold out! We are truly grateful to our community, as well as the many friends, neighbors, visitors, and supporters from surrounding towns and beyond who continue to support our department year after year. Events like this help us continue our mission of serving Union and the surrounding communities.

It's been a busy few days for our volunteers. Last evening, our members responded to a tractor-trailer accident involving a fire on I-84. Then today, while many of our members were busy preparing and cooking chicken for the BBQ, we were also called upon to assist with a search and rescue incident. Despite the demanding schedule, our dedicated volunteers worked together to ensure both our emergency responses and the BBQ were a success.

We couldn't do any of it without the support of all of you. Thank you for your patience, your generosity, and your continued trust in the Union Volunteer Fire Department.

Last evening, June, 12, 2026 at 10:26 PM, the Union Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported tractor-trailer accident with fire on Interstate 84, just east of Exit 72.

Upon arrival, crews found that the operator had attempted to avoid a bear that had entered the roadway. The tractor-trailer traveled from the westbound side of I-84, crossed the eastbound lanes, and came to rest in the woods after striking a tree head-on.

Fortunately, the driver was able to self-extricate prior to our arrival and was transported to the hospital for evaluation of injuries.

The bear involved in the incident was found deceased in the median.

Connecticut State Police - Troop C Tolland was on scene as well as the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP).

We would like to thank our mutual aid partners from Willington Hill Fire Department, Willington Fire Department, Bungay Fire Brigade, Sturbridge Firefighters Local 170 MA and Stafford Fire Department No.1, Inc. for their assistance.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder of how quickly conditions can change on our roadways, especially in areas where wildlife is common.
