In the footsteps of wondering bison grew Running Buffalo Clover. Bison aided in maintaining the necessary environment for the clover to grow and spread seeds as they disturbed the soil. However, this species faced hard times with the disappearance of the bison and increasing loss of habitat. Resulting in it's designation as an endangered species. Now recovered, Running Buffalo Clover flourishes here at Big Bone Lick SHS. Visit the park soon to see this special plant while it's still in bloom.

Today is the longest day of the year! ☀️ During summer solstice, the northern hemisphere reaches its maximum tilt towards the sun, thus positioning the sun at its highest peak in the sky at mid-day. This astrological event has been celebrated by humans around the world for thousands of years and has many different symbolic meanings.

What better way to spend the longest day of the year than at your local Kentucky State Parks. Big Bone Lick will have a variety of activities going on all weekend! See our activity schedule posted around the park for more information.

We know you all are keeping eyes on the progress of our new Discovery Center, but we couldn't leave the Visitor's Center behind! Brand new siding will really make the current museum pop next to the Discovery Center once it's complete.

As for the progress of the Discovery Center... we have a roof! Some windows have begun being installed and the crew has focused their attention to the indoor materials.

This female Luna Moth won't be with us for long.

Once these moths emerge from their cocoon, they will only live for about a week. In the moth phase of their life cycle they have no mouth or digestive system. Their whole focus is on reproducing. This individual can be identified as a female by the lack of large, feather-like antennae.
