No pips yet!
When chicks are ready to hatch their little beaks break through a membrane and they start breathing air inside their egg. This triggers them to ‘pip’ or make a small crack in the egg with their egg tooth. They will wiggle, and, over hours, lengthen this pip into a line called a ‘zip’. The movement of their bodies starts the process of blood leaving the egg environment (much like a placenta) and returning to the chick’s body. Ever tried to ‘help’ a struggling chick out and the membrane started bleeding? That’s because this process hadn’t finished yet. Interesting fact: the membrane inside an egg is excellent for stopping bleeds, and you could use one on small cuts on your body and it would work as a natural bandaid.
I will check on the eggs daily and provide updates!
