The following is a briefing from NWS Blacksburg as of Wednesday, March 11, 2026:

Threats: Severe thunderstorms producing damaging wind gusts, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

Location: Along and west of the Blue Ridge, with the greatest threat concentrated north and west of the I81 corridor.

Timing: This afternoon through tonight

Overview and Impacts:
• A Marginal and Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon through tonight.
• A cold front approaching from the west is expected to bring scattered thunderstorms, some storm could be severe.
• These thunderstorms may produce strong wind gusts up to 60 mph, which could down trees and power lines and result in localized power outages.
• Large hail and tornadoes also possible, but strong damaging winds remain the main threat.

Lock down items on the lawn and porches.
Be vigilant to your surroundings this evening.
Forecasting the event to peak at 10p-2a tonight.
Shaping up to get little rough in Monroe County.

Threats: Severe thunderstorms producing damaging wind gusts, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

Location: Entire area, with the greatest threat concentrated north and west of the I81 corridor.

Timing: Wednesday afternoon and evening

Overview and Impacts:
• A Marginal and Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms exists Wednesday afternoon and evening
• A cold front approaching from the west is expected to bring scattered thunderstorms to mountain locations from Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night
• These thunderstorms may produce strong wind gusts up to 60 mph, which could down trees and power lines and result in localized power outages

Given the Governor's declaration of a State of Emergency, it is advisable for non-essential workers to avoid using the roads. The current road conditions are hazardous, and the Department of Highways (DOH) is prioritizing main roads. Secondary roads are not expected to receive immediate attention.

Operation Lifeline Food Give Out - Monroe County and Surrounding Areas

Lifeline Church Peterstown will be having it's monthly food give out on November 15, 2025 and due to the current hold on SNAP benefits we are expecting a bigger turn out than usual.

It is our desire to assist as many families as possible during this time.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.....
If you are planning on coming to pick up food, please either leave a comment on this post or message us so we can begin to prepare for the give out and increased number of families.

If you come to pick up on the 15th and already have an Operation Lifeline Food Card, you may go ahead and get in the pick up line. If you do not, please park and come into the basement of the church to sign up. You can then proceed to the pick up line.

Those signing up will need to bring a photo ID.

Are you a quick-thinking, calm, and resilient individual who wants to be the vital link between citizens in distress and the emergency help they need? Monroe County E-911 Center is seeking dedicated 911 Telecommunicators to join our team of first, first responders. As the voice of calm in a crisis, you will have a direct impact on the safety and well-being of our community.

What you will do
• Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls, texts, and other requests for assistance.
• Gather crucial information from callers, often in high-stress situations, to assess the type and location of the emergency.
• Dispatch appropriate first-responder units, including police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS).
• Provide life-saving pre-arrival instructions to callers, such as CPR or first aid, while resources are en route.
• Monitor and track the status of emergency units in the field and coordinate with other agencies as needed.
• Enter and maintain accurate, detailed records of all calls and dispatched activities in a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
• Remain calm, professional, and empathetic while managing multiple priorities and different personalities.

Required qualifications
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Proficiency in typing and basic computer applications. Preferred 35-45 words WPM.
• Excellent communication skills, with a clear and effective speaking voice.
• Ability to think quickly and make sound decisions under pressure.
• Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as our center operates 24/7.
• Successful completion of a background investigation and pre-employment testing, which may include typing, hearing, and psychological evaluations.
• Valid Driver’s License.

Compensation and benefits
• Starting Pay: $12.50 per hour.
• First Two Years: Hourly rate increases from $12.50 to $14.00.
• Within Four Years: Achieve top pay, ranging from $14.00 to $18.00 per hour.
• Health Insurance: Full, paid health insurance coverage.
• Retirement: 20-year retirement program.
• Paid Time Off: Paid vacation and paid sick time.

Southern Summers County in southeastern West Virginia... Mercer County in southeastern West Virginia... Southwestern Monroe County in southeastern West Virginia...

* Until 415 PM EDT.

* At 319 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Welch to Tazewell to Chilhowie, moving east at 35 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

* Locations impacted include... Bluefield... Wytheville... Bland... Princeton... Marion... Tazewell... and Pearisburg.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Prepare immediately for damaging winds. For your safety, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Stay away from windows.

Locally heavy rain will quickly reduce visibility and result in ponding of water on roadways, standing water in low lying areas, and minor flooding of creeks, streams, and areas of poor drainage. Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution to avoid hydroplaning.

When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of hail of any size, as well as reports of any wind damage, including downed trees or large limbs, to the National Weather Service by calling toll free at 1...8 6 6...2 1 5...4 3 2 4.
